I am currently receiving the message “You have entered too many instances recently” in regards to zoning into any SM instances (haven’t tried other instances).
I logged on after a server shutdown and over an hour had elapsed since I last played on my account or had gone into an instance. Got into a group for SM GY and ran it once, then on the second attempt we pulled too big and tried to run out of the instance. When we zoned out, there were horde killing us so we zoned back in, but the mobs hadn’t dropped aggro so ran out then in then out then in etc. trying not to die. We eventually zoned back in a finished the dungeon, went outside to reset and when I went to zone in I got the above error message. Note I have only zoned into a maximum of 3 unique instances in that time so I am unsure how I triggered this system. Any ideas?

Sounds wrong to me. I haven’t seen that message in so long. It’s like you pulled a memory from my subconscious.

Right? This is something from the depths of my mind… bizarre to read again.
Yes:
It didn’t mean “unique instances.” How many instances of SM Graveyard did you go into in “etc.”? Too many, apparently. Every time you zone in, it counts.
I’m not defending this design (or condemning it; I have no idea what considerations or technology requirements cause it, either way) but that’s how it works.
This is normal behavior. This is something people don’t know? It’s in the modern game too. The limitations have been up and down over the years.
If that were true then people would get locked out after wiping and having to run back to zone in too many times.
It should be unique instances.
I have no idea what the limit is in Classic now but it shouldn’t get hit by people doing normal runs (not overleveled speed farming). It could be a glitch of some sort.
One ‘interesting’ thing about SM is that all four of the SM dungeons are effectively one instance so you can go run all 4 of them and it would only count as one instance (unless they changed that from Vanilla). Dire Maul is the same way in that all three dungeons are a single instance (and two of them are connected inside as well).
that exactly happened to me today… after 1 try only.
Same, after one SM run im locked out, so i tried a different character and got the same message
This is an account-wide 5 per hour cooldown that rolls. So you’ll be able to start another as soon as your 1st instance has passed 1 hour of time passed.
If you are swapping groups and going in and out of the instance while this is happening, it’s very easy for you to be creating new ids which all count to this cooldown.

Did you join a group that had already been running it for a while? If you join someone elses group and they are at the reset limit i think It applies to you to. Not 100% sure though.
I’ve had some weird errors like this too,
Doing some BRD arena runs, no prior instances for the day, ran 3 then on the 4th it said I entered to many. We didn’t even wipe so idk what was up.
Sometimes it’s just bugged I guess
Why is this account wide? It wasn’t that way in retail classic. I remember farming the limit on multiple chars.
But ya killing a dungeon boss 3x only in an hour and being capped is absolutely bonkers and annoying.
This explanation doesn’t really make sense.
You can run in and out of an instance as many times as youd like without it hitting any limitations.
My understanding is limitations only apply to unique dungeons, I.E. any time you reset a dungeon or zoned into a “new” dungeon. An example would be you ran sm gy 5 times in an hour, meaning you reset it 5 times, then you would be unable to enter another dungeon say Mara until that hour was up.
