It’s in the middle of the woods with nothing around to signify what it’s for or what it does. It’s obviously hooked up to to something and does indeed function, yet you have no idea what that function is until you press it. Do you press it or leave it alone?
Or how about this one. You are on the USS Salem, a heavy cruiser which is currently a museum ship in the Fore River Ship Yard in Quincy Massachusetts. You have just climbed into the C turret with its three 8" guns. You walk up to a control panel and there is a red lever labeled “Fire”. What do you do.
I actually experienced this.
I press it repeatedly until it stops working.
I mean, it’s a museum peace, right? None of its armaments should be functional. So I’d go ahead and press “fire”. If someone dies, well that’s on the museum. I would be 100% not liable.
Hooked up to what? What’s it connected to? A tree? A rock? The ground?
Years ago my father installed a light switch into our tree in our front yard. It didn’t do anything but that didn’t stop passersby from examining it, furtively flipping it, then looking around to see what it did.
I won’t but I’ll talk my girl into pressing it
