You could have modernized Classic AND Kept Nostalgia

Imagine a path of exile style talent sheet with TONS of talents per spec. This can be done by keeping the classic talent system BUT adding in a ton of new options by MIGRATING most of today’s PvP talents as well as fun abilities from the death knight, monk, and demon hunter classes. It would maintain the essence of the classic talent trees too. In this post, I will share a few off-cuff ideas of what I think should have been implemented.

Rework useless stat items. i.e. +agility +spirit plate

Rogue - Inherit the demon hunter’s Double Jump baseline.
Vengeful Retreat and the Monk’s “Roll” could be talent options in whichever specialization.
Roll & Vengeful Retreat could get 2 exclusive sub-talent options below them that augment it (choose only 1).
(1) Blur - Gain Evasion for 2 seconds after using Vengeful Retreat.
(2) Cloak of Shadows - You take -100% less magic damage for 2 seconds after using Vengeful Retreat.
Killing Spree is too fun and should be added somewhere.

Warrior - [Heroic Leap] exclusive to Fury spec. Does more damage upon landing and has a larger radius (buffed version|Legion passive).

Protection Paladin - [Divine Steed] is now a talent but reworked. Increases move speed by 30% and reduce damage taken by 30% for 8 seconds. Immune to snares for the duration.
Retribution Paladin - [Crusader Strike] Average damage. Heals nearby allies for XX% of the damage dealt. 20 second cooldown. CD lowered by 1 sec for each successful Flash of Light.

Demonology Warlock - [Summon Felguard] added as a top-tier talent.
[Possession] - Last talent on the demonology tree. Your body temporarily dissipates as you enter your minion for 20 seconds. Your demon has 50% more health and deals 50% more damage while you’re inside.
Your hotbar changes like a Rogue’s changes upon stealth; matching the abilities appropriate to your minion.
If your demon dies with you inside, you pop right out but suffer 1400 damage. Subtalent option allows you to empower Possession with [Wraith Walk], which is inherited from the Death Knight. You gain Wraith Walk automatically for 3 sec after Possession ends.

Fire Mage - [Summon Fire Elemental] talent option in the Fire tree.
Arcane Mage - [Force Grip] This is the DK’s Asphyxiate. Talent option.

Feral Druids - 3 cosmetic-only Cat Form alterations on the talent sheet. Does not cost talent points.
(1) Worgen Form, but without armor, uses claws
(2) Humanoid Bengal Tiger from WoD.
(3) Fire Kitty from Legion. class quest requires achievement for killing Ragnaros

Let Blizzard do their ART and use Classic Servers as a sort of playground. This company beats the entire world by staying true to its motto “gameplay first”.

World Quests - Upon reaching level 60, you unlock world quests, only they are slightly different. A targetted zone will scale with your level for that WEEK, and you will do a few kill tasks there to get gold, honor, and reputation with your selected group (MoP’s ‘star’ system). The rep gain is minimal. Other rewards are debatable.

Mounts - Add in a TON of mounts as purchasable options. You know how many raptors there are in the game in 2019? I do not believe that all the mounts should be migrated, but it would be awesome to have a large variety. The white skeletal warhorse from the argent tournament comes to mind.
If the mount is too fancy it should not be implemented as it may hinder the classic fantasy.

Transmogrification - This absolutely needs to be in the game with the rule that its classic server only loot. Please allow green sets to count in the ‘set’ collection category.

Lore - Have Chromie introduce new players to the server via short cinematics. Something to do with the timeline being warped and what not. “Some things are different!”

These are just some ideas of what Blizzard could have done with Classic Servers. Do you hate them? Do you REALLY want the 2004 version of this game? WIll it keep you playing? I hear plenty of people played private servers, so I believe yall! I just wanted to make this post and give everyone my thoughts. Tell me what you think. I personally think Blizzard wishes they could go this route. Thanks all

This list disgusts me.

Gah!

This isn’t Classic. Whatever you think people who want actual Classic, not “modernized” Classic, want it for, you’re utterly wrong. Take this WoW 2 completely unrelated to Classic forum suggestion to the General Discussion forum or something.

Well a lot of people don’t know what they want. “You think you do, but you don’t” is a popular meme by one of the WoW devs but he is not wrong in saying it. Though it is hilarious because it comes off as smug and many people could feel mildly insulted.

Diablo2 was a GREAT game. But I do not want to play it ever again unless it gets remaster treatment like Warcraft III: Reforged. I feel the same way about Classic WoW. I think a lot of people only remember the good times and don’t recall the nuances of their experience, and they certainly don’t juxtapose it to their relative sense and standards of modern gameplay. I and many others feel like people are going to go back to Classic Servers only to realize how archaic and cutthroat it is.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a good example where the fan base thought they wanted riveting stories with their own starships to traverse the galaxy.

In reality, the story-lines were sort of cute for one play-through, but as far as longevity is concerned it was a complete and utter joke. The whole game was SHLOPPY JOES even while being made in 2011 with a $250 million budget.

SwtoR’s legacy is Bioware giving the people what they asked for and then having the masses turn on them and say they failed to deliver, when in reality it was an MMO and needed to be designed as such (rather than pretend to be KotoR 3,4,5&6). They also could have chilled out on all those long loading screens, but hey thats part of Knights of the Old Republic’s charm right? (Sarcasm)

I just want you all to give this a good contemplation. It would still feel and play like Classic, but it could be INSANELY fun and be super refreshing for those who get tired of BfA and future expansion. A perfect monotony break to keep people subscribed even longer. Its worth Blizzard putting some effort in to plus they could gain a lot of gameplay experience from such experimentation.

yeah. or they could just make vanilla be vanilla. since that is what was asked for.

But the amount of tweaking and balancing for sweeping changes like that would continue well after the initial release. It would be a bit of work.

But if you wanted continuous patch notes, then that is what you would get.

This post is so wrong it could have been written by Trump.

Please be sure to read the latter end of my previous comment. I know its what people asked for. I want to put my idea out there and have people actually consider it rather than right it off as “Thats not vanilla though…”
Maybe we could get vanilla AND SOME. You have to fight forces of relativity (it is 2019 not 2004) that will indubitably mitigate your experience of the upcoming classic servers.

I loved Baldur’s Gate (1998 RPG) but the recent remaster was not good enough for me. I truly thought I wanted to start my new D&D character and go out there and explore the world of Faerun again.
However, I found myself unable to play it past just a few hours in. I uninstalled it and haven’t had a desire to go back since. MANY people think this is what is going to happen with Classic Servers. I’m not warning everyone as a doomsayer, I’m just trying to get people to CONSIDER what it would be like to EMPOWER the classic version of WoW. I hope that is clear

And now, in the greatest words ever spoken by the Classic Development team… “if you want -insert here- go play BFA”

Reported and moving on.

Agreed. Modern Blizzard doesn’t add complexity, it takes it away. For me and many others this is a massive step backwards in game design, but I’m not the target audience for their games anymore.

This isn’t even a “Modernized Classic”.

This is just you changing stuff for the sake of changing it.

Plus, the modern vision of WoW for Blizzard is Battle for Azeroth so we probably don’t want them doing any sort of modernizing to Classic.

Some of you are saying that this should be moved to the General Forums rather than Classic. I disagree but do understand where you all are coming from and would not mind if it was moved appropriately.
Thanks all

And most do know. People want Classic WoW, not this silliness, whatever it is, Diablo/WoW mashup or whatever.

So this is more of a “why don’t we just scrap everything completely and make a World of Warcraft 2?” thread than an actual classic thread.

I am not really on a side. But science is showing that a LOT of people are deluded on many fronts. For instance, I just saw a TEDEd talk about how and why people marry the wrong person, and why it happens so often. Most people believe that love can only grow from a sort of trauma bonding process, so they end up skipping out on a proper mate because they consider it too boring; lacking potential narrative (which is false!). In other words, they are looking for the wrong thing. They actually put value on risk factors like higher rate of straying or being chronically argumentative.

In gaming I think its similar. We all think we want something but so many times its not true and that is an awkward pill to swallow. Lastly, I admittedly could be wrong about what I THINK Classic Servers should be, but nevertheless wanted to put my thoughts out there.

I’m glad your imagination has been sparked so thoroughly.

One minor point, however. Should we invent such a amalgam of modern and classic mechanics, we would NOT want to reinvent the nostalgia! Nostalgia is the very thing we’re constantly being told (less so these days) will run out and fail to keep us invested.

I don’t agree with this assessment. Classic is the exact opposite of what you’re stating. Most of us KNOW that Classic is what we want, and how we want it because we’ve already experienced it. I consider vanilla WoW to be the best game I’ve ever played, and I had a stupid number of hours in vanilla to prove it.

Classic is already our “proper mate”. Most of us have spent years with her, only to have her taken away.
