You’ve Worked So Hard, Now You Can Buy This Item”

I’m starting to not like this game loop mechanic, we have to put in all this effort/time to unlock an item, but you can’t get the item because you don’t have enough of the currency to purchase the item. And of course, it has to be a special currency that you have to “farm” to get. Why can’t it be gold, it seems like gold is a currency used mostly between players now. I know you wanna keep us subscribed, but there’s gotta be a better way.

You must be new to this genre of game.

Yeah. I start every expansion with high hopes of purchasing/unlocking several items.

About 25% of the way on the journey I lose interest completely and do something else.

Then a few years later I remember I wanted X and farm it when everything is much easier.

In most cases by the time you can buy this item, you have better.

Contrary to what you might want to believe I’ve been around the gaming genre for a very long time (“I was there when it was written”). And I’ve seen it decline into a mess of what we have now. We had a currency that worked fine GOLD, but because the devs with their misguided attempt at trying to make the command mission table in WoD more enticing to players, they over inflated the gold rewards for those missions and many people who had an army of alts became extremely wealthy.

So in order to slow down players from buying items, they lock those items behind both a reputation and a unique currency grind.

So I would like you to refrain from assuming someone “must be new here”, when the individual is trying to talk about a game mechanic that has become tiresome to deal with.

We’ve been using non gold currency in MMOs long before WoD was even a concept.

But it wasn’t as rampant as it is now. Back in Mist, you could purchase all the mounts, pets and tabards with gold.

What item/currency you tryna get?

I am talking about MMOs in general.

It was pretty common.

Well, at least TWW throws the currency at you so it isn’t a huge deal.

Dragonflight was not only far stingier with the currency, they saw fit to include random crafting materials alongside the cost. Some of which were actually quite expensive during the first season.
Absolute nonsense. I agree, after grinding out the rep, gold really should be all you need to buy the items.

Oh, and “Well other MMOs do X” isn’t a real argument. We’re talking about WoW and what would be good for WoW, not what random irrelevant MMO #21321 did ten years ago.

Because gold has largely been de-valued ever since WoD Garrison mission tables, and later the WoWtoken.

Tons of people rich and sitting on their stockpiles, even today.

The devs want you to actually play for these other resources since they can’t just be bought, I assume.

Also, the other currencies are all that hard to get. You get Resonance Crystals pretty passively.

Because currencies is the fairest system for people playing a new season.

Otherwise, people who have hoards of gold saved up would simply buy everything right away without any challenge.

We’re talking about cosmetic rewards at the end of rep grinds. Those have never really been that expensive back when they were bought with Gold to begin with. The big money gold sink cosmetic items usually didn’t require rep to begin with.

A lot of the gold sinks we’re actually locked behind exalted, the only ones that weren’t were the Mad Merchant and the brutosaur.

Have some examples? Because both the Tundra Mammoth in Wrath and the Yak in MoP were non-rep just like the Brutosaur was. And to be clear, these were both very expensive for their time.

Unfortunately, that all changed after WoD.

Legion and BFA, you’ll find things costing HUGE amount of gold.

In addition, if it couldn’t be purchased with gold, it often involved RNG, which were in fact items you only obtained from grinding rep.

Honestly, the trading post and such is the fairest the system has been in a very long time.

Crystals aren’t hard at all to farm with the number of daily quests in hallofall. Kej is initially expensive, but with rep, the exchange rate on the crystal to Kej vendor improves, making Kej way easier to obtain by obtain crystals.

I played season 1 Shadowlands - THAT, was currency nightmare. The number need so great that I didn’t even bother to grind it because it seemed unobtainable.

I already said that TWW is better than previous expansions because the crystals are given way more freely, so you aren’t making a point that I didn’t already make myself. Even with that being the case, it should still just swap back to gold. Or at least give an option to buy the crystals with gold.

Yes, gold is devalued, which is exactly why gold sinks should be in the game at every opportunity that doesn’t put out non-rich players.

They were ~90k in BfA, Sons of Hodir mount was 10k in Wrath as is the Thundering August Cloud Serpent and Amber Scorpion.

shadowlands irritates me about this.

so i get the rep and unlock the item from the quartermaster but i can’t buy it because it also requires two different types of currency. i hate farming currency (forget what kind the little boxes are but those suuuuuck). still haven’t unlocked all the stuff… wait, no yes I have, i just don’t have the second type of currency. now THAT is an irritating way of going about things…

Yeah 10k in wrath is equivelant to 90k in BFA. You seem to not realize just how inflated gold numbers became due to garrisons/orderhalls/war tables
