Ok, now, before you flame this and say how much Blizz has added to the catch-up mechanics and all that, I agree. It’s been a nice change and has made the game far more accessible. There is, however, a moment around 450 where it all becomes the same old. Either do M+, do raids, or hope for the weekly vault to be kind.
Why is there no better solution for those of us who want another option? Look, the Azereoth Mystery event was actually pretty cool. Maybe it’s not exactly what we need for gear, but the interest from fans was pretty well-received. So why can’t we be allowed to do long solo quest grinds for gear? Maybe give us 1 or 2 to do per week and have that be an excellent alternative to M+, which, by all accounts, most people either love or hate.
Would it be so horrible if people were allowed to progress (partly) by themselves? Lore-wise, there are a TON of characters in the WoW universe who became powerful beings all by themselves, too. I know this is an MMO, and I’m not suggesting that we all live alone and never speak, but at the same time, I see a LOT of people doing the old “stand around in a capital city” while they wait for one of the two progression options to happen.
There has to be a better way. And it begins with us admitting that forced grouping sucks sometimes. If that’s your thing and you love playing with friends, awesome. I do too. But my friends also have lives, wives, and kids. We can’t always coordinate our schedules, and that shouldn’t be the only option for progression either.
Solo quests are fun. A lot of fun, actually. It’s an entirely different feeling knowing that it’s you against the world, and it’s about time that WoW started to see that and offer us some fun lore alternatives to the standard progression options. Hopefully, we will see some stuff like this added for those of us who want a change of pace.
