When Alex was fired “they” made it a mission to rewrite wow into a completely different narrative direction, emasculating everything while simultaneously retconning as much of wow’s “problematic” legacy as possible.
%100 out of spite.

Thrall…
…anyway, I enjoyed the story, unironically, but then again I did ALL the storylines from each coven.
FYI, Burger King’s burgers will get moldy and rotten over time, but McDonalds’ burgers don’t.
Not forgiving the devs either.
Like today I spent over an hour just trying to turn in anima spherules from Castle Nathria because of the ridiculous class/covenant restrictions still in place.
There are so many systems on systems and silly and senseless restrictions. Just like, what the heck were the SL era devs doing? Trying to chase people away from WoW?
Burger King > McDonalds, in all possible ways.
Sausage McMuffins with cheese, S-Tier sandwich and everyone knows it.
Writing in this game is so bad that you are probably going to have a better time by ignoring it entirely lol.
This wasn’t an SL thing, this was a WOTLK thing.
It is more of a game than a story. If you want great stories, read a book or watch a movie.
I remember I went from Molten Core to Naxxramas. And I had a blast. Was there a story? Who cares? As long as I am pew pewing and ransacking the dungeons of its loots, i dont care. 20 years later, i am still here pew pewing dungeons over and over without bothering much with the story. I come to WoW to play not to look for a story… but to play a videogame.
It’s like when i played Pacman. Who needs a story?
I skipped SL for real life reasons, I was unable to play and only returned in the DF prepatch. But. BUT, Shadow Lands has some immaculate transmogs.
So I was grinding Torgast to get all of the transmog shoulder, weapon and back cosmetics and I got to thinking…If I was trapped in this obnoxious edgelord expansion for 3 years, I’d probably have quit. It would have broken me.
There is plenty to criticise about shadowlands, but it does not include how they handled Arthas. They did that perfectly. Because Arthas had no more story of his own. He is long since dead, both in the story and to us the players. All that was left to do was for characters who had been the most affected by him to make peace with their trauma and move on. And we got that.
Still better than Shadowlands by a landslide.
I despise WoW’s narrative direction. The lack of actual stakes and blatant disrespect of the legacy of many characters/items/places is astounding.
I’m not sure what the narrative team are brewing at HQ, but I’d like some actual depth and darkness to Warcraft. This game is a Disney themed mess in its current state.
Yes, WoW’s story has never been Pulitzer Prize level writing, not even really Marvel level writing even.
But whatever the heck Shadowlands story was, it was worse than the worst storyline any other expansion had.
Arthas’s story ended when I defeated him on Icecrown 12+ years ago.
I refuse to accept any continuance of his story after that fact.
Ah. I should have known.
In March 2013, Taco Bell acknowledged that some of its ground beef products sold in the United Kingdom contained horse meat.
What kind of “darkness” are you looking for. There are dark themes and depth but if you want blood and guts, that is not really darkness just gore. The issue is with how WoW treats those themes. They get pretty glossed over which is what gives the Disney feel. Also solving everything with the power of friendship or the friends we made along the way.
Now when it comes to stakes no MMO is going to have actual stakes. That works in single player games but not in MMOs.
Meanwhile other mmo’s with 10th of the budget have better
Is it “an especially bad story worth hating someone over” or do you “just not like the story and maybe you’d be better served playing a different game with a story you do like”?
WoW is generally bad at plot. It’s generally bad at characters. What it’s not generally bad at is world building - creating history for the geography of the world, creating a backdrop for stories to be told. The world of Azeroth is a cool, fun world, with a neat mix of factions and races and histories.
Shadowlands degraded all of that. It’s such an unbelievably bad set of ideas for how an afterlife functions. The cosmological base of WoW is now irretrievably… stupid. Every expansion basically has to try and ignore the elephant in the room of how dumb the afterlife is. How every death on Azeroth means that person is going to be judged by… Pelagos. Every soul transported by a bunch of idiot wannabe angels who fought a civil war over whether they wanted self-inflicted amnesia.
God was it dumb.
