Yay another DDOS ATTACK

Yikes. Let me take a moment to explain it to you.

What blizzard is facing right now is a volumetric DDoS attack. By its very nature, this is a bandwidth exhaustion attack. Due to the way the internet networks, not all traffic comes in through the same pipe (assuming they have multiple connections, which they do and can be easily verified by checking any looking glass). Therefore, no one single router handles all the traffic. Not to mention there are chassis routers capable of handling 1Tb/sec and beyond.

Those routers can, and frequently do filter packets based off criteria supplied by the operator to filter out the legitimate traffic from the bad traffic. And because this is distributed over multiple ingress points to the network, it’s entirely feasible with todays technology.

Pretending like Blizzard can’t protect themselves against this is ignorant at best.

Can we really blame them? Their networking experience is limited to their DOCSIS residential connection and Linksys router. Maybe some of them have heard of pfsense and think they’re kung-fu network masters.

I doubt any of them have even heard of Juniper or Arista, nor do they know what DWDM and multiplexing are.

We can only continue to try and educate the ones that don’t understand, but if they’re not willing to learn then all hope is lost on them.

On the WoW Twitch streamer page, most of the streamers are still online and playing. So Blizzard and their consultants/vendors are slowly beating the DDOSers back.

If this is just continued DDoS and people are curious about more information regarding DDoS protection, there’s some interesting articles out there about the attempted attack on GitHub.

GitHub uses Akamai, which offers a DDoS protection service. It was the largest DDoS attack in history…and GitHub survived it okay.

Not looking to flame any argument, but if people are reading posts like this and want to learn more about DDoS protection, what can and cannot be done, etc., search on GitHub Akamai DDoS. There’s some good articles to parse through while we wait for WoW realms to get worked out.

Man, I barely get time to sit down and play for more than a couple of hours here and there. Just as I was logged in to play for the evening, this happens. This is SO aggravating! Really wish the a-holes doing this get caught and made an example of. As well, would like to see Blizzard work on ways to mitigate these attacks better - so everyone can play with limited to no interruptions. :’(
