I know that in my case, and I’m sure it’s not the same for everyone, but I do RP and play with those characters. Not all of them extensively, but I do still want those names.
However, there are names that I want even more. And I’d give up the ones I’m not enormously attached to for that.
I understand it as a means of assuring the names somebody wants are readily available - that the person can be contacted, spoken with, and so on. It isn’t so much of a “I’ve got a monopoly on all these names,” but rather allowing the opportunity for people to get the names they want easily.
It sounds silly, but since the Warcraft search function can be finicky, sometimes there’s no real way to get in contact with someone that has that special name you want. This forum is just a means of communication and certainty.
I just feel like the names might be gotten by people who want them more easily and directly by just being available for them when they try to make a character. It seems like there might be people who want those names but saw they were taken and just gave up.
I think having a thread for people to request names here is a great idea. I was just curious about the thinking of “snatching up” good ones before they can be taken by people who were interested, especially because they might not know about this thread or use the forums at all.

I’m not sure how else to respond or what you would like me to say, admittedly. This was based on Cannibal’s previous forums that functioned the same and I had only wanted to continue the tradition, so to speak.
I understand that it can be perceived as cruel, but I can assure you everyone that is involved in these forums are more than happy to give the names to interested parties. It’s just a matter of asking.
In my case, there are a few reasons why I do this.
I enjoy reserving cool names because I am interested in using the ones that I try for, and quite often so is my partner. It means that not only do we have some time to decide if either of us would like to use those names in the future without the pressure of someone else reserving it, but I also have the capability to give it to someone else that would really love to use it without the inbetween uncertainty.
So many times I have gone to create a character and cycled endlessly through the internet to find a good-sounding name that isn’t taken. It usually takes hours, or on occasion I’ll even give up entirely, deciding it isn’t worth the struggle that day. I find the concept of this thread to be relieving in that way, because although I am disinterested in the “trading” aspect and prefer to simply hand names out as people ask, I know there is a place I can look to see if someone has something I might be looking for and vice versa.
In addition - this is merely my own personal opinion - if I were someone else that strongly desires a very particular name in this post-GM-Ticket era, one of the first places I’d check would very well be the official forums. If I did not at least do a bit of digging to find out if there was another way besides character creation to obtain this name, perhaps I was not that interested in it anyway.
I don’t purposely snatch up names. I just have names for characters that I didn’t end up playing as much as I thought I would, don’t want to delete them and don’t want to pay for the name change for no reason.
I’m not so much offering names for trade. Just letting people who might really want them know they are available.
I know that when I started playing this character I really didn’t want the name “Tamani” or “Tammy” that badly, but over hundreds of hours of RP, and after having gotten attached to the character, I’m now willing to actually exchange gold and cough up the $15 service charge in order to get it. I do kind of wish someone had “snatched it up” to post it in this thread, as right now there’s someone who probably just typed it in on a lark, got it, and hasn’t bothered to log in or level in who knows how long.
As someone that has a lot of highly-valued names that I typically don’t disclose, the simple truth is that names are a commodity – not always for gold (or ever in my case, due to personal principles) but because when someone does have a name you truly want, you can offer a highly-valued name in return.
I keep an eye on these threads and, if I see someone requesting a name I happen to have, I am always glad to reach out and give it to 'em, free of charge! I’ve done so several times; however, I don’t ever just release them because I very well might need one to net a name I love someday.
… I also like to make sure cool RP names go to actual roleplayers when I can. I know it’s such a small thing, but it sucks to see someone with an awesome name mounting mammoths on roleplayers or trolling Trade chat.
