Okay, I feel the need to chime in here really quickly.
Fiction is written from the basis of real world beliefs, The Kor’kron RPers of yore were written off the basis of real world bigotry hiding in plain sight and in an “innocuous” form of storytelling, but what they did was very very harmful and still looked down upon today.
I am not familiar with what the Kor’kron players did, considering I’m relatively new to WRA, but I think I want to chime in here to address the general point.
The idea of Trolls being “on top” is harmful to more inclusive Troll RPers, and a greater, more accepting community as a whole. It’s a volatile and toxic theme that only hurts RP in the long run, and I don’t want to see something twisted and turned into a tool of hatred.
While it is true that the exclusion of people can be turned into a tool of hatred, I believe you need to make an attempt to disassociate the feelings of a character with the feeling of the player.
A character might feel intense hatred for a race/group/religion, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the player in question is trying to exclude you from RP. Conflict RP - given it’s performed well by both parties - is also a form of roleplay that can move a character’s personality and story forward.
Let’s take the troll you quoted. While the troll character might have supremacist views and would show them to my own character quite openly, that doesn’t mean that the player in question is trying to enforce this and exclude others from RP.
One example that comes to mind is two of the camps on a German LARP I attend. My own camp is all about liberty, freedom, independence and freedom of spech. Another camp is all about a fanatic theocratic rule with total devotion. You can imagine that (for obvious reasons) we don’t get along IC. OOCly, however, we are best friends. They frequently take in new players to show them the ropes, they help us out when we’re in trouble, and we frequently attend each others conventions to play NPCs for one another.
Maybe attempt to disassociate the fact that a character hates something with the player behind the character?
Your post reads a bit confusing to me, considering that I am not sure whether you’re talking about harassing someone OOC for the race they are playing, or facilitating an IC conflict based on Warcraft’s established lore?
If it is the former, then I obviously agree with you! Nobody should be harassed or excluded for what race they choose to play. If we are talking about IC conflicts and sentiments that are perfectly conform with the lore, then I am not so sure we agree. It would mean that you’re not separating the character from the person behind the screen.
But that’s my 2 cent on the matter. I had a raspberry muffin.
The time when Kor’kron RPers were a thing, they often times power gamed situations to where they would come out on top no matter what.
The meme is that they’d have dozens of snipers trained on their conversation to kill anyone who wouldn’t surrender their character for execution / interrogation.
Ah! Good to know! The old “I have a sniper in the bushes!” scenario…
Yeah, I digress. That’s a person issue and related to not being able to accept losing as opposed to simply playing a supremacist character.
Kor’kron RPers did worse than that, they used their RP to bully and shove around anyone they deemed was lesser then them, and generally made the RP scene so awful on this server that many people got chased off. The rampant abuse they perpetrated STILL rings badly in the ears of many people still here, which is why so many on this server are wary of anything resembling that going on again.
We need more inclusion, less exclusion, and NO BULLYING. So many people were abused and treated like dirt that you can’t fault anyone for taking a hostile stance when that ugly RP rears its head in another form.
I think mentioning of the Kor’Kron rp drama is actually perfect because it points out exactly the kind of behavior that would be wrong to do. It should also be noted that it is the latest major example of a community that has acted like that(that I’m aware of) and that went away at the end of MoP. This isn’t to say there isn’t toxic rpers still. There are certainly some. But Kor’Kron were an exception not a rule.
Khollorn, I agree we need more inclusion and less exclusion and NO bullying. RP should be fun for all involved. But unless you want all rp to have zero conflict and we all get along regardless of character then there is inevitably going to be character conflict. But it’s important to keep it IC and not OOC. Obviously listen to people if they tell you a certain element makes them feel uncomfortable and use common decency and ask if someone is okay with a more sensitive type of thing. Common sense should be used too.
The Kor’Korn situation was certainly awful and should be used as an example of how not to RP a supremacist.
The understanding that I have of most of the situations is that Kor’Korn RPers wouldn’t approach OOC first to set up a scene, instead, they’d roll in and flex their character power to the point where it was submit or die for the people they were interacting with.
Speaking as someone with a character who has no conflicts in their life, I can confirm that it’s woefully boring.
I agree that bullying is bad. No doubt. What I was saying is that outright saying any kind of supremacist/racist/hate/intense dislike sentiment from a character equates to exclusion and bullying is a bit too close to associating a character’s IC stance with a person’s OOC stance.
Based on what Cryptstalker and you explained, this sounds like an issue with the people behind the character. Essentially, they wanted to win so badly that they ignored a person’s OOC feelings on the matter. Which is obviously an issue that shouldn’t happen in RP and should be called out.
I wanna unlock mechagnomes and name one Linus or something so I can walk around giving people technical tips
I can’t tell if that tauren is trolling or not
well for starters he has hooves and horns, no tusks or toes
All I did was make a silly post. I don’t hate anyone. I just like a specific RP style that i myself partake in. I don’t want to crush anyone else or make them feel awful over what they like. Their RP is just as valid as mine.
I’m sorry if I made anyone feel uncomfortable with my comments I wasn’t trying to. I didn’t think it would cause any of this.
You didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t apologize. The offense or whatever it was reads like a parody to me. I would not take all that seriously and I’d take them less seriously if that was their sincere position. Its just goofy.
Keurig will continue being a horrible person because that’s how I write him as. I inherently write bias’ and prejudice into my character to keep them interesting and allow them for multiple arcs of internal conflict to come to a head, all affected by other characters in the world.
But that will never mean I intend to actually demean someone and bully them OOC. I ask; I ensure everyone’s cool with it; I defer to them on what they want; and repeatedly remind them that if they’re not enjoying the conflict I can immediately disengage and, if they will it, we can both retcon the story.
Antagonist characters are the makeup of roleplay. Whether it be an NPC, a GM dictating the villain of the week for their guild or another player having their own storyline and such, they’re the inherent movers and shakers of every literature world.
I know it may sound a bit harsh sounding, but I can and will roleplay antagonist(ic) characters. Characters that are convoluted and bring up bad things into the fore to people who’re comfortable with them. But I don’t do this to simply be an jerk, it’s to spur growth of Keurig, network, and also allow the opportunity for the other’s character to develop in ways that slice of life RP cannot.
The only thing I won’t ever actually introduce into antagonizing is sexuality and gender/sex. Because OOF. Keurig’s an equal opportunist in haranguing people.
this is a confession thread. you did nothing wrong. you LIVED
I clipped this just, so I can use it as a reaction some time but odds are when the time comes I’ll forget I did this.
Nooooooooo, Forsaken can’t have chocolate! You’ll re-die!
Forces mouth open and scoops out the chocolately goodness.
hahaha, that made my night. Looks like someone is a noble!
tbh your entire post was a bad take but i had to point out your male orc warrior logic.
You’re the reason orc RP’ers aren’t good.
I wanna join a guild and start raiding but I’m afraid I’ll lose my cool and start yelling at people
