It’s great that ww can now scale with haste! It’s exciting and it’s going to be interesting how it feels through a full expansion cycle of going from low gear to high gear.
However!, IMO, WW monk feels too bad when you don’t have haste. You just have long stretches of time when you have very few resources.
And this is contrasted by how great it feels when you get some haste gear.
My suggestion would be to make changes to the energy cost of ww abilities to make low haste not feel so bad. Hopefully this could be done without breaking ww from wanting haste. The other option could be buffing/changing Ascension and Inner peace talents so that low haste feels better. Ideally, there would be talents you could pick up to improve the low haste game play that you could drop once you get itemized better.
I think all ww monks have noticed this because of how your character played when the prepatch first dropped if you hadn’t gotten any haste gear.
I wouldn’t say this is a major issue but it’s certainly a possible pain point that could be smoothed out.
Just grab haste. I don’t like it either and I can’t say the execution of pushing WW towards haste suits my taste, but at least it works. I’m sitting at 45% haste flat and I dont have to take Inner Peace or Energy Burst.
I feel like how much of a slog it feels at first is just a growing pain of having our lowest value stat becoming our highest value stat.
This is why I suggest setting up talents to be good for low haste to provide more resources but you can drop them later when you have high levels of haste.
Doing that will heighten the risk that you dont want to get those higher levels of haste. Setting it up the way you would like, while ideal, tends to be easier said than done.
Prolly won’t, but that just means I grab the resource talents to compensate. That said, I don’t think we’ll be at haste values low enough that it’ll be like when the swap to haste first happened.
Personally, I think they should just give us back Expel Harm as a cast. It was great for pre-pumping chi, getting that extra chi point when you needed it, and also as a really nice oh crap, quick heal. Kinda upset at its removal, but I’m dealing with it.
It helps if you have some talents that interacts with Blackout Kick! aura effect (Energy burst), it gives you 1 Chi. RSK also gives Chi sometimes (Glory of the Dawn). WDP gives you a BK! (Revolving Whirl), and then a Chi (again Energy burst). SET also lowers the chi requirement by 1 (Ordered Elements). So you don’t need spam tiger palm all the time. Procs of tiger palms (memory of monastery) helps also. (Inner peace) reduce energy requirements too. And oc you need more haste.
Also if they do ANYTHING now to make haste/energy less of an issue now it will get nerfed in S2(100% chance). Probably again in S3 as well. This happens every time resources are overflowing for any spec of any role early on.
WW had scaling issues and a part of that was Haste being bad. Now WW is going to scale much better than it has in forever and the last thing we need is the scaling to be nerfed over and over because its too good.
I made this post in another thread. And I still feel it’s true and now I have smaller gaps where I am energy starved. You can look up Thugster on Dalaran server. I have not re-adjusted for haste yet so my stats are all mastery, crit, verse. So if my haste is essentially zero and I do well. And you have that high of haste then I might venture to say you might want to look at your rotation
When I first started playing with the new tree I was feeling the same.
However it was primarily due to old habits. Meaning I was running serendipity where you clip fists of fury, as well as the spinning crane kick using abilities during the channel.
In my humble opinion these two habits which for me are now super drastic changes were hard to break.
The more I play the more I get adjusted to breaking bad habits the more this spec now flows. If you let the full channel on fist of fury go and don’t clip it the channel is allowing you to build energy. Then when spinning crane kick procs ( in my opinion it procs a lot more now with whirling dragon punch ) you let the full channel go off again you are regening energy during the channel.
To me it is becoming less and less of a problem.
I don’t write guides and have no data ( as in hard numbers to say this ) all I have is my experience to judge. I don’t think I’m far off because I hold my own in mythic 10+ dungeons during the prepatch. Heck sometimes I’m even top dps. So either some of what I am saying is true or I am just consistently playing with super bad players
Speaking of and tangentially to some of the talent buffs, we’re never dropping Communion with the Wind are we? And if so, at what point do you think talents like that should just be baselined because Communion with the Wind isn’t the only talent that buffs an ability by such an absurd degree that we’re probably never not taking it.
Right now CwtW is very strong, but Darting Hurricane may also be strong since it amps up our burst windows. If you baseline every “always take” talent then people will complain that there’s no interesting or powerful talents available, so its a balancing act.
That is always a valid concern and thankfully we don’t have too many talents like CwtW left where it’s essentially mandatory. That said, these types of talents still feel like arbitrary space fillers to eat up talent points and literal space on the talent trees for interesting/powerful talents. I’m surprised and disappointed Fast Feet hasn’t been flat out baselined along with Improved Touch of Death. It may come off as nit-picky, but at the end of the day it’s 3 talents points and 3 potentially interesting talents (not that they’re guaranteed to be interesting or anything considering we got Jade Walk chucked at us).
If you are running out of energy it feels bad, I understand. However if you are having big gaps where you are waiting for energy to regen then you are doing something wrong. Which ultimately causes these big gaps. This also lowers your dps and makes it not flow.
So I guess the higher your dps the more the spec will flow.
