WTF Is 9.1 Torghast?

I just watched the Preach video on Torghast and I’m actually installing the PTR now to check out the new version of Torghast, but I just have to ask. Why? Why add affixes? They made Horrific Visions Anti-Fun for melee and this is no different. New affixes: Mobs do more damage to characters in melee range, mobs drop orbs that have spinning lasers. Just why?

The Adamant Vaults: When you have a good Torghast run and get 4 stars on your run with the new scoring system, you get access to the Adamant Vaults. I don’t even get what the vision for this is. It is just MORE Torghast floors with different mobs. It adds virtually nothing.

Why not make the Adamant Vaults a Trove of the Thunder King-esque system? Make it so after you have a very good Torghast run, you get access to these vaults. Make it so you are running around dodging crazy traps and looting chests. Make these chests drop anima, cosmetic armor, and pets/mounts. Add cosmetics to this system for God’s sake. Make it have a reason to keep going back.

After testing on the PTR, here is some Feedback and General Opinions:
Affixes:

  • Got nerfed a bit and generally feel better, but some are just horrible to play into, specifically as melee. Getting horrified at 40% HP with melee mobs dealing 10% increased damage is an instant death.

  • I like the added challenge, but there needs to be positive affixes to, which leads us to:

Blessings:

  • In their current iteration, they are horrible. For example: “Blessing: Gives you one Obleron Endurance” while the torments for the day are just horrific. Go crazy with blessings; a 100 phantasma vendor item is not a “blessing”, it is barely a positive change to my character.

The Adamant Vaults:

  • I believe we are still seeing an early iteration of it, needs rewards and more interesting MECHANICS not AFFIXES. Make the bosses fun. They do the same 3 mechanics every other boss in Torghast does.

Scoring System:

  • Positive change I suppose, although it has serious problems. In the Upper Reaches, the floor with barely any mobs and only maw rats pretty much drains your bar and there is nothing you can do to get it back up on that floor.

Box of Many Things

  • The changes the box gives you are all positives BUT it needs to be account-wide. I will never want to complete this talent system on alts and will probably put me off from alts the entire expansion. When you completely fill the box talent tree on all characters, give an account-wide achievement. Ven’ari upgrades are account wide, so be consistent and make this account wide too.

Anima Powers

  • Please god add a bunch of new ones to spice up the feel. Currently I go into Torghast, I know what build I want. That should not be the case, need to almost double the available anima cells.

Overall, I do think it is an improvement, but the changes do bring a lot of annoyances. These annoyances, from what I have personally played, are melee centric. With added rewards and some new ideas for affixes and blessings, I think Torghast could become a really amazing piece of content.

I don’t know all the details…but Torghast has always had affixes.

A constant fire DOT, random adds spawning when not in combat, extra mob damage and health

This just sounds like an expansion on that

Oh brother, you don’t know the half of it. Right now we have one Torment. in 9.1 we have 4 or 5 that make the gameplay horrid. Then they add a talent system to make it less horrible.

“When brought below 40% health become horrified for 3 seconds. This effect can only occur once every 2 min.” How does this make Torghast more fun?

I’d say it’s still too soon to judge all of this, personally. I’ve seen several posts from people who have actually done it in the PTR that say it’s really not as bad as people seem to want it to be from reading about it or watching a video. Also there’s probably almost 10 new posts about this on the front page of the forums…not everyone needs to make a new post.

Unfortunately, we say this every single time there is a patch. And nearly every single time it comes out being as bad as we all thought it would be. I’m stepping into the new Torghast now. We will see.

Im gonna hop on and try it also after work.

The slowly decaying bar for not doing “GOGOGO” was infuriating in Preach’s video and it literally made me sick to see that mechanic. But I will find out for myself.

Preach is just venting out. His line of reasoning makes absolutely no sense. He interviewed the guy and got this explanation

"The reason thorghast feels like a chore is because of how it was structured. Having a set reward at the end and a number of deaths means that people will die on the last boss and get nothing. This was an experience so horrible we had to nerf thorghast to the ground. It feels like a chore because you can’t lose

That is why we are removing the death counter and only allowing you to move on to the next layer if you got a really good score, but you get loot either way. Now we can make thorghast more fun and harder since that horrible scenario was removed."

Preach seems to have completely missed this point and is now confused why they are making things harder after they nerfed it, which is such a nonsensical question. The afixes are irrelevant, they are there just to shake things up, the real fix is the score and the reward structure.

They created new art assets but didn’t want to rotate a whole new independent wing in? I don’t know what the intent is either to be honest. It isn’t explained and the UI is still a work in progress (you’re supposed to be able to right-click to see a score screen and that doesn’t work, also you sometimes won’t get a score screen).

To be fair, Preach pointed at the “Terminal” affix being pointless… and it is. Terminal has no reason to exist when the score system accomplishes the same thing. In fact, people are getting worked up over Terminal for no reason at all - it might as well not exist. But something existing that is pointless is not a reason to put up a 20 minute video whining about Torghast 2.0. It’s kind of insane TBH. I don’t really know what Preach is trying to do aside from secure views for his videos. Almost none of his feedback was useful in any possible way.

I’ll one up you! At least I didn’t have to run Warfront each time it rotated for my faction; unless, I was going for the quest reward gear.

Gonna send you back in time so you can warfront again. But instead of gear i’m only going to give you azerite power. Oh and it’s the only way to get azerite power. That quest for the warfront? yup, also gives you azerite power. But less.

After awhile, I stop caring about Azerite power to unlock certain traits, there was a period I ran islands weekly, then one day I decided to never go there for the rest of the expac and mainly just did WQ for emissary, mythic+, raiding to earn pocket of azerite.

What are you talking about?

I’m going to assume that for some reason you think easy = fun. If easy = fun for you, you can just do easier content, get tower XP, become OP, and then do later floors when the upgrades make them easy for you.

For many of us, hard = fun. Making Torghast harder simply makes it more fun. And then you can focus less on grinding out Tower XP and just play Torghast, maybe focusing on speed boosts and score boosters so you can power through a run in lightning fashion.

Everyone wins.

Hard = fun, I’m down for this but when the boss has excessive HP and an easy to avoid one shot ability by the time your bored pummeling down the boss HP that’s when you make the mistake to miss the interrupt or dodge aoe smash, your dead! Not my definition of fun, keep me engaged like Mage Tower boss, not just big HP and one shot ability (this is noticeable in TC end-boss).

That’s literally why they’re doing affixes instead of just scaling enemy HP/damage. New affixes add a new challenge to overcome beyond just “have enough HP to not die” or “kite a lot”.
