I have the appropriate gathering to supply crafting and I very rarely have to visit the auction house to fulfill patron orders, unless I go for purple, and I only ever do if it’s for a first craft for the extra knowledge.
If you have gathered enough to make things for crafting orders without the auction house, then you should not have had a problem keeping up with AA in the gathering profession.
Even so, depending on your crafting profession, there can still be a lot of significant costs for crafting orders that do not turn up via gathering, so there can still be a pretty decent gold cost.
I have terrible luck on the knowledge items while mining though. It’s terrible.
Here’s my experience, I have a gather toon, herbs, rocks, and fish. I haven’t missed a week of gathering the KPs since launch, and have found all the treasures and bought all the point kickers.
Just now I made my second 5 star blue accessory for herbs. That gets fishing, herbs, and rocks done, best equipment, missives, and enchants you can craft.
I still have a chef’s hat, rolling pin, and the two profession specific 36 slot bags to go. 900 KP needed, and a very limited amount to gather per week. No crafting orders to help in this situation.
So yea, some do need that weekly from DF to even things up with those that can craft for KPs.
Why not have your cook on a character with a crafting profession with a higher acuity intake?
It’s a completion kind of thing. And cooking isn’t hurting too bad, I can craft hearty and feasts. Just have to get it done.
Acuity shortage?
I dunno. I’ve been throwing stuff at the reagent bags and I kinda slowed down on doing patron orders beyond the weekly unless they were profitable (and for mining/engineering, few end up being profitable).
I genuinely think acuity is the worst addition to this game in years.
Its a terrible mechanic thats sole purpose is to pad playtime. It adds nothing at all to the game.
The vendor in the artisans consortium area in Dornogol that sells recipes also sells bags of materials for 600 acuity as a way to dump excess. Usually gives a decent amount of tier 3 mats and I got a useful boe recipe once. I maxed all primary professions the first month, buying almost nothing from the AH (the exceptions being dawn and duskweave), just gathering while questing and doing patron orders twice a week, some offer 10 to 30 acuity or a kp item. Also you can get 2 kp items from wax piles/ chests every week for crafting professions.
you should have those already - those professions have catchups
the double gatherer I am currently on has all 6 rare profession equipment plus 1200 sitting in my bags
I have 3k acuity and virtually nothing to spend it on, so I just stopped doing the patron orders.
In DF they had the weekly 'Show me Your Mettle" and gave you 150 a week and I never ran out of mettle (basically acuity) during the entire expac, except on my engineer, who I started late, and I bought too many eng recipes. Why was that taken away? To make you grind more and time gate your prof tools.
My primary profs all have their blue tools because they can make up the acuity from patron orders. Why should gatherers not have the same option? If others have worked well with the current acuity system, great. I still think it sucks.
I think it was originally there to give crafters ways to specialize more (do I want more KP or tools or recipes?) and to slow down progression. Except profession shuffle pretty much killed that.
Now it’s just a “feel bad” currency. At first, especially if behind and catching up, there simply isn’t enough of it for all the things and it’s slow. Then when everything is crafted and bought, it just piles up uselessly. Well, maybe it can be traded for some reagents now. I still have thousands of mettle left over from DF.
If they’re going to ignore profession shuffle anyway, get rid of the thing.
