not exactly sure how you missed these…
they’re definitely brighter and more whimsical than past cinematics, but I wouldn’t say the quality is lower.

While technically. Yes both are Cinematics. Both are very different still. And both are designed, and created by two separate departments with various teams working on both using vastly different pipeline communications and development engines.
Original Cinematic at launch was created by Houdini and Renderman (they have added Katana into their mix since the release of WoD.)
In game cinematics are used with Maya due to easier transfers to their inhouse game engine.

Thanks, but those still have that washed-out look. Better, but still a far cry from what we had almost 20 years ago.

I get it, you can be as snarky as the next guy. 
Fair enough, but the result is it looks cheap and phoned in compared to what we used to get. It is worse. My complete point, in a nutshell.

As others have said, why not make a fair comparison?
Compare that shot of the Warlock to the troll and dwarf in the take flight. They’re not gritty grimdark but they do have that same level of exhaustive detailing and minutia.

WoW has always felt somewhat cartoonish, but it is getting seemingly worse
