I’ve been playing Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis games lately.
My top 5 Atari 2600 games:
Dragonfire
Frogger
Donkey Kong
Fishing Derby
Berzerk
My top 3 Sega Genesis games:
Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Golden Axe
(Sega Genesis has a great Frogger port. It was the last game on the console)
I like Sonic 1 the best of the 2D Sonic games. It is very easy to pick up and play in one sitting. Unpopular opinion: I like Marble Zone & think it gets a bad rap. The special stages in Sonic 1 are also my favorite of the series.
My Atari 2600 Dragonfire high score: 4520. I also beat the white dragon.
If someone manages to beat my high score, let me know.
To avoid breaking any rules, no discussion of emulators.
I think the consensus is no later than the 6th console generation. (Sega Dreamcast (DC), Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2), Nintendo GameCube (GC), and Microsoft Xbox).
Ohhhhh!!! I remember spending hours with my brother playing this. We fought over who could be the Dwarf, so some runs I was the Amazon or Barbarian and vice versa.
As for my top I’m old games in no real order:
Yoshi Island
Super Mario World
Sonic 3 crammed into a Sonic and Knuckles cartridge
Jurassic Park Rampage Edition
Runner up Zelda for the Nintendo because the gold cartridge on display at my local Albertsons would make 4-5 year old me get super excited whenever I went grocery shopping with my mom and she would rent it for me sometimes. I don’t think I was ever actually good at it.
When I was really young, like a toddler, I remember my parents had a super nintendo. My dad had some Madden game he played but my mom loved Legend of Zelda. I remember trying to play the zelda game but there was a dark cave with a monster and I didn’t know what to do. We also had a Top Gun game. I never could land the jet on the aircraft carrier. Those were my first experiences with games.
Here are some of my top picks. Still have all of these games too.
Top 6 Nintendo 64games
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Banjo Kazooie
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Pokemon Stadium
Star Wars: Racer
Pokemon Snap
Top 5 Game Cube games:
Pokemon Colosseum
Zoids: Battle Legends
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
Top 10 Xbox Games:
Star Wars: Battlefront II
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Red Dead Redemption
Star Wars Episode III
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords
In all fairness, Sonic 2 has a great climatic boss battle with Metal Sonic & Eggman.
Chemical Plant & Aquatic Ruin have an amazing soundtrack & I like Casino Zone too.
Mystic Cave & Metropolis are my least favorite.
What I like about Sonic 1 over Sonic 2 are the special stages, green hill zone, less zones, & the lack of spin dash doesn’t bother me (the sound irritates me). I also like Marble Zone, & while Labyrinth Zone is notorious – it can be overcome. I really like Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, Spring Yard Zone, & the Scrap Brain Zone.
There’s a saying in the TES community that your first TES game is your favorite TES game: I first played Sonic 1 on the Sega Genesis and Sonic 2 on Gameboy Advanced. Then later beat Sonic 1 and did Sonic 2. I prefer them both to Sonic 3 & Knuckles atm.
This is going to make some people’s ages hit them like a ton of bricks, me included.
As for the actual question, in no particular order:
Splinter Cell
Need for Speed Underground 2
Silent Hill 2
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance
Forza
Forza mostly because I have fond memories of happier times between my father and I tied to it. Command and Conquer (RA3/Tiberium Wars) as well, but that was on the 360.
The Xbox was our first console due to cost. Before that we had some PC games (which we owned due to business, so they were a necessary cost) so that’s really the only retro console I can personally list.
when i was a lad my sister and i would play kirby super star a lot, it was one of the only snes platformers which let two people play at once. Idk why more games didn’t do that, surely they coulda let luigi run around with mario in super mario world. Anyway kirby super star is a great game to play with your younger sibling
Also at my friend’s house he had “snake rattle and roll” for the nes another rare game with actual multiplayer of the time. You played as two snake heads that grew bodies as they ate stuff on sort of an isometric q-bert style plane of movement
Kirby super star, snake rattle and roll, the multiplayer innovators that walked so that mmorpgs could one day run
I also liked the marios and zeldas like everyone else but we all know about those so I figured it was time to give snake rattle and roll its time in the sunlight and mention it
Wow I looked it up and apparently it was made by rare of all companies I assumed it was some no name snake based company which went bankrupt immediately after no wonder it was so excellent
the first video game i remember playing was either duck hunt or Lego Star Wars on the gba? it mighta been the color, just was a gameboy that wasn’t the OG
the first game I properly remember getting really deep into as a kid was super Mario 64 on the DS. little big planet, mario galaxy, paper mario (wii virtual console), the mario and luigi games, fire emblem, etc
i think my favorite retro games now are kotor 1 and 2, though. really fantastic RPGs. wish there were more like em, outside of dragon age and mass effect.
Pokemon Yellow is the best of the Gen 1 Pokemon games and no one can convince me otherwise. What other game can you get all three starters without the need of trading?
