My primary issues right now with low geared alts getting corrupted gear is that
a) my low geared alts have to do the cloak quest to unlock the ability to cleanse corrupted items.
b) I don’t want to do the cloak quest on my alts because its too long and requires me to do stuff I already did on my main and don’t want to do again because it wasn’t particularly fun the first time.
c) my low geared alts have one essence if that, because I am not going to grind them out again and again, and I would find doing the cloak quest quite difficult even if I were willing to try it.
d) The cleansing of corruption costs a currency obtainable in visions so I can’t actually cleanse an item until I finish the cloak questline and run at least one vision… on an undergeared alt with two rank 1 essences.
I’m not jumping through all those hoops on multiple alts sorry. My main is far enough along for now and my game time is almost up but instead of using another token because I could do things on my alts, I’m going to let me sub lapse because there’s too many post-level-cap-systems to deal with to get alts at an adequate level to play.
Maybe I’ll come back closer to Shadowlands and use the catchup mechanics that will inevitably be added to get my cloak the rest of the way… or maybe I’ll just not come back at all if Shadowlands looks to be more of the same under a veneer of trying to be different (because anima is totally not AP right? And covenant trees are totally not more rental power right?).
Once upon a time, alts could be leveled to max and they’d have their entire kit. Outside of simple gearing, they didn’t have significant chunks of player power (essences) locked away behind other content (rep, pvp, etc). Once you were maxed you were good to go and the only thing you really needed to be concerned about to jump into whatever content you like is your gear. Let’s get back to that design philosophy.
This so much, I wish I could up vote you more. I did all their jumping through hoops to get this cloak… like the war-front story lines, Nazjatar (with no flying), and the story line for a cloak.
I don’t mind grinding to a point, this is past that point! I could not see unlocking this cloak on more then maybe two alts before this game becomes like a full time job I have to pay to go to. I am not asking for epic best in slot gear for all my alts but the amount of rep gating and gating in general is getting ridiculous! Still granted spoiler warning I am most likely not going to attempt to focus on making my other alts jump through these hoops.
Yeah the old gearing philosophy was more open ended and allowed player agency.
Current gear philosophy is on rails and takes away player agency. For all the talk about increasing player agency in shadowlands they sure like taking away a lot of player agency in patch 8.3
I dunno, I got a 410 ring with a reasonable corruption affix. Pretty happy with that, I rolled a new class for the guild in 8.3 so it helps tremendously to make me not suck until I can get higher ilvls.
If you need, just use some of the new essences in your minor slots instead of what might be your BiS simply to reduce it’s effect.

b) the memento cost for cleansing is removed.
Then even someone at fresh 120 who doesn’t have the cloak yet and who happens to get a piece of corrupted gear can cleanse it and use it without issue.
Because its not about lore/realism, its about gameplay.
A fresh 120 who hasnt done the cloak quest can’t safely use that corrupted item even if were an upgrade because a) they have no corruption resistance and b) they cant cleanse the item because the option isnt available and even if it were they won’t have the currency necessary to pay the cost. And since they are at a low item level they will likely have a hard time doing the cloak quest.
If potential upgrades that would make doing the cloak quest easier end up corrupted, you can’t use them. And thus you’re slowed down towards your goal to gear up to do the cloak quest.
This isnt about depth. It’s about a mechanic of the game actively punishing players without any recourse.

they are using this to force attendance in 8.3 content. your solution is good for the player, bad for them trying to sell the 8.3 content.
whether liked or not…you will be there as you pick up corrupted gear. to get the momentos, to cleanse your gear.
Blizzard is learning. You get casuals like me. We didn’t titanforge. we didn’t spam naz for pearls for benthic. We…did not boost the numbers that ran this content to get this stuff.
So this may get us more into this. Maybe…
Personally once I get the time to solo raid in legion even this char if she clears some harder raids I have had issues with and easier raid goes faster in some way is “done” 8.3. She got her goodies, I cleansed them all. If it work for my needs coolness.
Also a possible side trick for some to use is just get the cloak bit done. Do the quest part for the mementos. Fail that capital city one hard…walk in to die. You get the credit even for dying…makes it go fast lol.
this should get you 50 mementos in the chest. take the 100 gift reward from quest reward and DO NOT use the vision trait tree.
Boom! 150 mementos to cleanse your gear if after cloak you have not desire to run this stuff.
Was thinking the same thing. I do not want to go through the whole quest line on all my alts to cleanse corruption. I just want some alt gear. It was fine before 8.3, now it sucks.
Assuming the quest to cleanse corrupted items was acquired as soon as you acquire your first corrupted item, putting 5 mementos in the various assault zone chests would work to address this issue for fresh 120s in low end gear.
Then they could travel around chest hunting to cleanse a recently acquired corrupted item that they can’t otherwise use yet.
