“Why no people talk anymore?”

Eh, I dunno, this sounds like a wild exaggeration. Kicked for saying hello? How can you know why you got kicked? I don’t recall being kicked, but does it tell you WHY?
WoW’s dungeons went silent as far back as legion, before the “contract” became a big ol deal (despite being in the ToS already since like, day 1)
This is simply the byproduct of being an old game, with some old communities. A lot of players already have their online friend groups – no need to add more tbh.
That being said, I just got out of a 15 BRH where we had many laughs and jokes and comments about each others’ mogs and such. It was nice.
Sometimes you just need to start talking and others join. Not always, but usually.
I think it also depends on the content. In M+, which is timed, I find there’s rarely banter. In a pug raid though? People usually don’t shut up lol!
People know the dungeons. There is no strategy to discuss.
you know how when you argue with someone you go back and forth escalating it?
I like to skip a few back-and-forths, and respond with an escalation that normally should come out much later in the argument. Sometimes it catches them by surprise, sometimes they REALLY go full _________ in response.
i sometimes enjoy arguing with total strangers, especially if they started it.
Pretty sure dungeon chat has been largely obliterated since wrath. There are always a few blips of life at the start of expansions, but overall, if the content is queued or has a timer you don’t see too much chat.
You’re right on both counts of pug raid chat being terribly noisy and m+ chatters mostly just being quiet unless spoken too.
It’s easy to forget that making friends online is not terribly different from making friends irl, it takes a bit of effort from both parties.
Occasionally I’ll get into groups where there’s a small bit of chatter outside of people saying “hello’s” (which I usually respond to, because I feel bad otherwise), but it’s definitely not as prevailent as it was years ago – I think the chattiest I saw dungeons was during Wrath, and it started to die out after that.
Was gonna say, I’m polite enough to at least speak before/after runs if things need to be communicated or the run goes well.
But just idle chatter? Nah, I’m already in Discord talking to people when I play.
According to some BGs “should be silent” as well, even though that’s idiotic unless you’re playing rated (and on voice).
This Silence in dungeons is a relative new thing within the last year or so…
lol no, no it is not, stop making up ridiculous things
Hello”
“Ty all”
This. I’ve had probably a 1/3 ratio of someone else saying hello back. But I always do it.
Also regarding cross server queuing, I actually noticed a lot of regular people in WotLK classic’s dungeon finder. Even cross realm communities can exist, it’s just a matter of how large the pool is.
Also I’m on OCE which is a smaller pool than US to begin with.
Before Discord, Mumble, Skype, Team speak, and Ventrilo became more popular. Before cross-realm dungeons, Player verse Player and raids where a thing. Talking in chat channels and groups was a lot more common as this would be pre-Cataclysm. Today however people seem to get triggered to easy, have no respect for their fellow gamers, and odds are you never see that player again if not on your server.
I remember in one dungeon in Wrath of the Lich King over in Storm Peaks, we spent 3 hours wiping and we kept at it because we wanted the dungeon completed. We would talk about what we were doing, what was going wrong and mention damn how costly the repairs where getting. Groups where a lot more fun back then.
When Cataclysm came out things started to change as even though there was still chatter in the group it changed. People didn’t care about what you thought anymore or how they acted or if you could use a drop, since cross-realm allowed you to take what you want and never be seen again by people in that group.
When I left about a year into Cataclysm, I went to Star Wars: The Old Republic and groups again where very talkative, maybe because it was your server only to do anything with. It was also a new game, so everyone talked tactics and strategy’s if they didn’t share a voice system as mentioned above.
When I left SW:TOR back in 2016 I quit gaming until a month before Shadowlands and my 1st group made me never want to group again. Also made me never want to play a healer ever again something I had played exclusively along with tanks for over twenty years at that point. While I have leveled a lot of DPS, healers and tanks since then I tend to not do group content because no one talks and explains anything anymore.
Your assumed to know every piece of group content backwards and forwards, know your class backwards and forwards and asking questions or making mistakes gets you kicked. So, while I will ask questions when I can its mostly crickets in general chat or zone chat.
Typically, I’ll ask why my nameplate is yellow in group or raid content even when we are not engaged in something. Let people know this is my 1st time can someone explain what’s about to happen on this NPC etc. Heck even when someone requests help and you reply in chat that you will, nothing but crickets after that. Maybe because it sends the whisper to a separate window and people don’t tend to look at the new tab?
It use to be that in dungeons people would talk.
Then Talk.
I don’t get why people expect others to talk if their not going to put in the effort to make the game social if they want it so badly.
I must say that the Follower Dungeons with the bots talking feel more like players than real players, well to a certain degree.
Nah, they just feel like NPC’s. Because they are. Which honestly, i don’t mind.
Just go in the dungeon, do the thing, hear NPC say canned dialogue, credits.
I’m not playing this game to talk or make friends. I am in the dungeon to get the dungeon done and that’s it.
For me I just don’t see the point of socializing if I’m never going to see the person again. Let’s just do our job and leave. RIP server communities.
So I guess my question is what has brought on the silent players in dungeons these days? What’s up with that?
Without a big need to talk about mechanics. there isnt a need to talk at all. Just a hello and gg ty at the end, maybe. Cant quite talk for fun when you are pulling trash after trash.
Well I’ve been playing Wow for 20 years
I’ve also been playing WoW since it’s inception. I only remember talking in groups because the game wasn’t figured out and needed explaining as there weren’t guides for everything and ventrillo was saved for big raid activities.
This Silence in dungeons is a relative new thing within the last year or so…
It is not. The silence is there because there’s nothing to discuss. Everyone is a stranger, group content is pathetically easy up to a certain point and at that point you should know what you’re doing. The longer an expansion goes on the less conversation happens. Small talk has never been a prevalent thing. It’s always been abnormal. As I get older and the playerbase gets older there just isn’t enough time to dedicate to sitting down and holding a long form conversation. It’s business.
I’m also what would be considered in this community as a very social player. I’m not afraid to PuG, make friends or grow the guild and participate in all facets of the game.
In timed m+ content, yeah typing is literally a waste of time.
Heroic and normal dungeons get a little chatter, but those typically only take about 15 min which isn’t much time for anything
Mega dungeons and early season mythic 0 give a little more room for that when they are new and take longer.
In raid though… there’s tons of random conversations, chatter, and memes. Maybe because you are there for longer and there’s more downtime.
Idk i really don’t want to talk in dungeons anymore. Sometimes someone says or does something funny and it starts a conversation just fine. Otherwise I get some “Super” player that gets mad we are slowing them down for any reason or spend their time saying how everyone sucks but them. Or if i do say something no one answers anyway.
So I guess my question is what has brought on the silent players in dungeons these days?
Yea, that social contract we all signed, that’s why. Why risk offending someone when your account access is at risk.
