It use to be that in dungeons people would talk. Sometimes there would be just some friendly banter. Or people talking about how to do the dungeon. Sometimes arguments would break out specially if there was a wipe. Some people would put-up those dps meters and then argue back and forth about who was doing the highest dps or lowest dps. And yes some of the arguing and insult slinging could become disturbing, at least you felt that you were in a group of live players.
Recently I have noticed that no one speaks. Although it is kinda good because the constant fighting and bickering is also gone. People talking is a rare thing. Leveling dungeon are now run on rails; fast speed runs in complete silence.
I must say that the Follower Dungeons with the bots talking feel more like players than real players, well to a certain degree.
So I guess my question is what has brought on the silent players in dungeons these days? What’s up with that?
I often play late at night, when many of the players who are on don’t even speak English. So that can be a problem…
Also, people being quiet doesn’t usually bother me. People are more likely to speak up when something is wrong. When things start getting chatty, the chances of a bricked key go up dramatically. Sad, but true. All it takes is one tarnished ego.
Maybe people are afraid to start the conversation. They’re afraid of “triggering” another player for whatever reason that may be.
Personally? I don’t speak unless spoken to. I’m quiet that way irl too but I’ll gladly participate in a banter if I feel like it.
I just think people are on edge and /or just want to get done and get out.
There are two cases
(1) The conversation is good but makes the run take significantly longer with all the typing
(2) The conversation is surface-level and says nothing important. Nobody actually cares how a stranger they will never see again after 10 minutes is doing.
Most people who play this game enjoy meeting their goals efficiently like most people in the world. As a result, case 1 conversations don’t happen and case 2 is a waste of time so people don’t do it.
This right here! I am afraid to talk because I don’t want to be kicked for some dumb reason. I’ve heard about people getting kicked for just saying hello.
I want to point out, this is the actual difference. There used to be server communities and you would see them again so it made sense to care about them.
Why people don’t talk anymore in dungeons is that they are cross-server. We lost community for the sake of expediency (art truly imitates life).
I always say hello and thank you.
Folks are running so fast through dungeons now it would be hard to talk
Perhaps run dungeons with a social guild where folks talk on discord
So do you try speaking and no one replies, or are you also silent? If you are silent yourself, you can probably answer the why already.
For me, its because they are timed and hectic. How am I gonna type when we are rushing and a button needs to be pressed every 1.2 seconds and theres multiple things to dodge and interrupt at all times.
And yeah,
Cross server killed bothering to be social. It used feel worthwhile when it was people you’d probably run into again.
I use to say hello when I first spawned in the dungeon but over time fewer people would say hello so after a while I just gave up trying to say anything.
I find in pugging keys people will usually do hellos and whatnot before starting, since that’s downtime where you aren’t on the move. Then usually there’s GGs at the end. But for somethint you queue like heroics, there’s no waiting to start. You spawn in and the tank is zooming and off you go.
people in lower keys tend to be a bit more talkative. in higher keys they only chat about the necessities beforehand. the quieter the run during, the better honestly.
in queued dungeons its usually dead quiet except for the once in a blue moon chatterbox
What I have noticed is it’s not just in the dungeons anymore, but all of the content. Whenever I say hello or just try to ask a question in general you are greeted by crickets. While in guild you might get a few comments even in guild chat it can lead to the same thing. Voice communication seems to be where most will chat and usually that’s for guild players (granted I use to have people join my discord for groups even if not in the same guild).
To me honestly it started with cross-realm dungeons, player verse player and raids. When we as a community only had our own realm to worry about people knew who they were running with normally and people had to respect their fellow players less they get socially banned from grouping. Why Blizzard didn’t combine servers as the population died off like most games do can only lead me to believe they didn’t want investors, shareholders to lose faith in their gaming model.
The genie was let out of the bottle so there is no way going back to fix what is broken. They could start merging servers which I think they need to do as it’s cheaper to maintain few servers, but people don’t chat anymore.
