Wow's Holy Trinity of Dungeon Groups. Will it ever Change?

Wow like most other mmorpgs out there. Have the holy trinity of dungeon grouping. Which is 1 tank, 1 healer and 3 dps.

Will this ever change?

MMO-RPGs that have tried it haven’t ever really succeeded.
But I for one welcome more content that doesn’t require a tank and/or healer.

I think if they tried 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 dps that wouldnt be too bad.

That would be worse for people lol.

Yea, should be reduced to 1 tank 1 heal 1 dps

Lets really see those DPS tears flood the world as their que times go to 3 hours for a heroic

I think 3 man dungeon would be cool. Like 2 hybrids and a tank. Or 2 pure dps and a healer. Or 1 tank, heal, and dps

we’ve done those before - scenarios. and the end result was bringing a healer was basically wasting that spot. 3 dps or tank + 2 dps was the best way to go

would be cool to add a 4th dps on a support role and have 6man groups.

Every class ends up being a tanky melee dps with ranged attacks. By necessity.

Not in the near future, because honestly there’s a reason why a lot of MMOs do it because it freaking works…

I think for the dungeon bosses, they should let the first five people who sign up enter as a group, regardless of their role. And then add a passive hps aura if there’s no healer.

For it to change, there needs to be a reason.

Changing it to what? How would that make the experience better? What is currently lacking that would work within WoW’s combat system? (I dont believe a traditional support class works with WoW’s combat).

No trinity just means dodge meta. Nah.

More to the point – no tank means that everyone has to be able to soak/avoid damage regardless of class or armor type, and no healer means that everyone has to have some way of replenishing health.

I don’t have an answer that works better than the trinity. Maybe someone else on the thread does. But MMOs have been out for what, about twenty years now? If someone had an idea that vastly outperforms the trinity, someone would have implemented it.

That they haven’t strongly suggests that there isn’t one.

Honestly? No. I dont think it will ever change. They may create content that doesnt require a tank or heal, but the trinity is the core of their entire game design. Encounters, Mechanics and pretty much everything about PvE group content in WoW revolves around that trinity.

As others have mentioned, games that went away from the Trinity havent fared well. I will say I enjoyed Everquest as support roles were necessary. You had a Tank, Heal, CC, Haste/Buff, Puller, and DPS. There could be some overlap in those roles, but you wanted a mix. Since there were no Spec’s in EQ just classes, it was needed for the diversity.

WAIT! They did add in content that didnt require Tank/Heal/DPS trinity. This was scenarios. And unfortunately they were a disaster. They were 3 player, short dungeons. There was no way to tune them. And having a healer in them, actually felt bad, as things just couldnt die fast enough. So most comps were 1 tank 2 dps. As the tank would be immortal in there, due to them trying to tune them to not need all three roles, so healing required was low. They were not challenging. Nor were they fun.

I think the ship has sailed for WoW and the Trinity. There just is too much game already there based around that Trinity to change it. Now ffor a Next Generation MMORPG? I really think bringing back those support roles of EQ would be great. Really add to that group utility and make-up. I loved EQ. I mained a Bard and played a Mage, Shadow Knight, and Shaman. EQ up through Planes of Power expansion was probably my favorite time gaming. Nothing really compares to the nostalgia I have for that game and that period of it.

Would do more to fix long queues than anything ever done before.

Dungeons and Dragons Online has 6 man dungeons and 12 man raids.

Let’s hope not, I can barely keep up three bot DPS standing in sanguine at a time.

Why do you want it to change? Do you understand the trinity exists?
