WoWHead Sus?

Is WoWHead being naughty for anyone else? It’s been fine on Chrome for several weeks, but then a couple of day ago, it wouldn’t stop automatically redirecting me to T-Mobile. I switched back to Brave and turned the shields off for WoWHead. I still see the ads, but it stopped the redirecting. I know they need to make money from ads, but they went too far.

The onslaught of ads on wowhead is getting really out of hand lol. Gotta close down two or three of them on every page load and then it still has banners on both sides. Cringe levels of ads.

Ublock origin and adblocker prevented this for me. Ublock origin is no longer supported which was doing the heavy lifting. Gotta find a new one to replace it.

WoWhead has been an intrusive ad nightmare space for like a decade, it has been a major topic at multiple points in WoW’s history, malware scares etc.

You have to wear your internet condoms going into WoWhead despite Blizzard relying on it as a resource in official articles and ticket responses every single day.

Frankly if they’re going to keep doing that, they should be paying them so they can remove ads from the website.

I use Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker. It works great. Well it’s for Google Chrome though. That’s about all I use so…

I also had to replace UBlock.

I do use AdGuard for other browsers.

I use Opera GX browser with Privacy Protection. I have to constantly click the “Continue without disabling blocker”, but have never been redirected.

ublock origin lite works perfectly fine even on chrome

Ublock still works just fine on Firefox. No ads on Wowhead (or YouTube).

UBlock Origin on Firefox. Only way I browse most sites with ads.

I sometimes get the samething when using it on a computer without an adblocker and yet they wounder why I ignore their pleas to turn off my adblocker when I am using one.

It’s too bad wowhead has a monopoly on the wow database. If you look up their history you will find they were a VERY bad company all the way from the beginning. They have used ads to push out malicious software to the users. And their social media facing employees are a big yikes. :grimacing:

Use firefox and ublock origin. That will wipe all advertising nonsense off of the internet for you.

I’ll have to check it out. My understanding the discontinued plug ins are the result of them not being updated so maybe ublock moved to the lite version and stopped the main one.

It’s because of a change Google made to the architecture Chrome uses. Firefox doesn’t use the same coding architecture.

Edit: By the way, you can UBlock on mobile Firefox too as long as you’ve got an Android phone.

You’re probably going to have to ditch Chrome if it’s getting that bad, Google took a hard-line stance against things like Ublock Origin so now I believe it doesn’t even work in the browser anymore

Firefox and Ublock Origin, or at least any browser that can use Ublock Origin, is definitely recommended

That’s why I use Brave browser, even on mobile.

Fun fact, you can use Brave to watch YouTube and listen to Spotify without premium, it blocks all the ads lol.

Just the Spotify thing doesn’t work on mobile, only home computers.

Brave cemented itself as my default browser due to this.

Ads are a cancer and only get more pervasive as time goes on.

Can’t blame people for inventing new ways to block them at every turn, when the ads are getting way more aggressive.

Why does anyone bother with using chrome after they deliberately broke ublock?

Works fine for me. Step 1 is stop using Chrome.

Brave is built off of chromium so if google really puts their foot down brave won’t be able to block ads either. Firefox and ubo is the only solution right now.

I know it’s Chromium-based, but it’s funny because I’ve used it for over two years now. And it still works.

Google owns YouTube so I expected it to not work there, yet it does.

I am incredible agreement with this & MMO-Champion is even worse, akin to a $5 asphalt technician during fleet week
