Wowhead ads: any suggestions on how to stop these?

No, it’s not. ABP takes money from ad providers to get around their ad blocking. That addon has been a scam for years.

Yeah ABP is garbage. I only use uBlock Origin.

Yeah, I’ve been a member of the site from the start and had a subscription from when it was first introduced. I had no problem supporting them early on, because the site was well done. Over the years I picked up enough of that passive site reputation system that I’ve been getting the free Premium for… a very long time now. It’s still a nightmare if I happen to use the site on mobile though, good lord.

Would definitely not be paying for it now.

Every time I went to wowhead some female streamer started talking in a window in the bottom right corner and and it got so annoying I started paying 3 bucks every 3 months.

Don’t try and pick the username Augvoker there cause its mine

Imo use Firefox with privacy badger , clean urls, and ublock origins…and optional dark reader (makes every website dark mode)
And also privacy possum (basically screws up their algorithm and. Screws up their targeted ads to you)

they tried pulling something a few months ago which forced the browser to disable adblockers.

youtube with ads was painful, even if it was only for a week or so :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually…no they just tried working around adblockers. With firefox/ublock it never worked, I never once saw a youtube ad. They might’ve been able to pull something like that with Chrome though. Thanks to the Stresiand Effect it backfired hard. Only tech savvy people were blocking ads before. Now thanks to their machinations, a lot more people have learned how.

Chrome is a TERRIBLE browser. The only positive thing I can say about it is “it’s better than IE”…but that is a very low bar to clear.

I use Firefox and get addon called uBlock Origin, blocks all those ads in wowhead and most sites I travel too…

How does that free Premium work exactly? Never heard of that.

Edit: NVM, I found the info. 25,000 rep is needed to unlock free Premium. I don’t have quite that much rep over there.

Install a good adblocker like ublock origin, block ads for free.

Ads are malware. They are literally dangerous.

I already have that addon, and I use OperaGX. My question was about the free Premium Caelia mentioned.

that is true. back in Legion i had a my antivirus pop up saying it had blocked some website malware. i had 2 browser windows open, Youtube and wowhead. now i use wowdb as much as possible.

I use ads on my websites, its a very good passive income after youve set it all up. Just sit back and wait for the deposit to hit your bank account, lol.
But I make sure the ads are out of the way of content and I put THREE ads per page, all in set positions, out of the way of content of the page so they arent annoying.

personally I block websites with my router once theyve annoyed me enough with that advertisement bombardment.
Either they want me to see the CONTENT of the page…or they dont and theyre pushing ads on me.
The former Im good to go…the latter results in “page not found” and they get no ad revenue from me again

Or, make 25,000 comments on Wowhead.

This is why iframes were such an issue.
You can be looking at a clean site, but the iframes can pull in off site content that can be filled to the brim with malicious crap.
Advertisements, evidently, can either be infected…or they can make your AV think they are and fire off the bells and whistles.
I use wowhead as little as I possibly can because I think its probably THE #1 trash site for ad abuse that ive seen in years.

I never see ads on Wow Head. I use Ad Guard. Can’t remember if I downloaded it or it was part of windows / edge.

uBlock Origin or do the wowhead donation… It is pretty cheap.

Yeah, that’s not how that works. I only have 20 comments.

i am not using ad blocker and i am not getting what op is getting
