WoW & Working Remotely

So uhhhh…

Sometimes when I am playing I will hear guildies talk about how they are “working right now”… in guild chat… while being in a dungeon…

Is this the norm or not?

EDIT

It appears to somewhat be the norm…

I figured I wouldn’t need to explain this, but in my later comments a lot of people seem to make the assumption I am referring to playing WoW on the company PC that contains a VPN and remove access for the company’s IT to view what I do. I fortunately am not -50IQ and I use my own personal PC for anything personal. I never even browse the internet on my work PC, connected to the VPN or not. Only smooth-brained bafoons use the company PC for anything other than work.

I was simply asking if a salaried person finishes ALL their work as assigned, is it really that bad? (playing on your personal PC and still answering any work calls or emails immediately). Companies use their employees for ALL they can get while paying them as LOW as possible while still retaining said employee. They will also continue to PILE on as much work as possible, until the person has a mental breakdown. (How many times have you seen someone breakdown and cry at your work or tell you they did the other night due to stress?) It benefits them and destroys the person. So, “asking for more work”, seems like a poor idea 90% of the time.

Now that you are all working remotely, are you sometimes playing on the clock, salaried or hourly?

Not wow but I sometimes play my switch at my desk

So, no offense, but what kind of drugs ARE you on? This is such an off-topic reply that I am impressed.

As a business owner I’d immediately terminate an employee caught playing video games on the clock. Luckily, with my line of work, I don’t have to worry about many employees being able to spend company time on games.

I do believe it is fairly common practice for employees to waste company time on video games though, I know a handful of people who do it all the time.

Is this an ethics question? If you need to ask if it is acceptable to bill your employer for time spent playing this game, you need to go back and study ethics.

My clients would definitely know if I was playing WoW while I was working with them… lol.

WoW will still be there when I finish my work.

I so love living somewhere this is illegal

Nope. I wasn’t being serious. I was just joshing you, but seriously, what were you meaning to say with your reply? It made no sense and was not related to my post.

I have my laptop next to my computer. Not playing the game during work hours but the forums are a good way to kill time waiting for stuff.

If they can juggle it and not get caught by their employer or have their productivity noticeably plummet, good for them.

I personally wouldn’t be joining dungeon groups because I don’t know when something will come up that needs my complete attention and I hate when people go afk or bail in an instance.

Ewwwwwww. One of those people? Not even a warning?

I don’t. If I’m working, then it’s just work but I also like to compartmentalize everything.

It’s generally in the employment contract you sign when your are hired. Not like there is no warning.

Wow… I wouldn’t try running a dungeon while on the clock, but I have posted stuff on the AH while waiting for something to finish at work.

Two computers, two monitors. Often have to wait for something to finish loading or computing while at work. That provides ample opportunity to spend 15 seconds fiddling with the AH or something. Running a dungeon, not so much.

Imagine trying to lead a mythic raid on the clock. xD

Then your boss calls…

When you are not in the office, it’s amazing how few hours you spend actually doing work. They may say they are “working” but they are probably just punched in. Not actually working.

as far as I understand it, some states have laws allowing employers to fire people with no warning needed, for any reason under the sun

I don’t know. Even IN the office I see certain types of people chatting 30% of their day about gossip… I won’t say which type of people I see doing this… But I have seen it at every job I’ve worked.

So being at the office does not equate to working all the hours necessarily either.

When I was working from home, I did not play on the clock.

I’d log in on my lunch break long enough to fiddle with some auctions, but that was it.

I would think if you want a warning for something as blatantly obvious as playing a game while on an employer’s clock, maybe you aren’t the type of employee to keep around.
