WOW was made on WC3 world editor

The early development of WOW took place on the WC3 engine. Early development/early alpha of WOW was just the WC3 world editor on steroids.

Also the WC3 world editor spawned dozens of custom campaigns and customs games. One of which was ‘DoTA’ or Defence if the ancients. This custom map later spawned an entire new genre of game which would ultimately lead to League of legends. Arguably the most popular game in the planet. Definitely the most watched eSport.

So. Two of the worlds biggest names in gaming —> WoW and LoL owe thier humble beginnings to the Warcraft 3 world editor.

Honestly the best thing out of blizzcon for me was the announcement of of WC3 remastered. Along with an all new super powerful / Amazing world editor. Just imagine the maps/games/campaigns people will make.

People still use the WC3 editor to make campaigns and maps today and they are absolutely amazing. Just imagine what they could do with the new one.

10-15yrs from now we will look back on the WC3:Remastered and be talking about how it spawned an epic new generation in gaming.

Tim foil hat: Blizz is bringing this out so they people can make new games and they can steal them hahah. They aren’t gonna miss out of making league of legends this time.
It's sad that Reforged is gonna have a better engine than HotS...
If it means the world editor is better I’m all for it.
I loved WC3 so much, it doesn't work well on modern computers so I was really hyped to get the announcement. Hopefully we get some new versions of the great custom maps.

They have patched it recently. I was playing it last nigh and it honestly looks amazing on my 2k monitor. Game holds up great.
I never picked up WC3 even after playing the first two. I'm really amped for this.

It looks like WC3:RF is just warcraft 3 rebuilt in the starcraft 2 engine with WoW assets (and some art improvements). It might also be pointing to a future graphical update for WoW if they're working to consolidate their tech and sunset some of their older engines.

And if that is what's going on, we might see WC4 at some point completely tied into WoW using the same assets and engine, just from a different player perspective.

Honestly, I hope that's what it is simply because if it were me in charge of it, I would allow people to import their WoW characters into WC4 as faction champion hero units, and tie them into the overall story (in place of Superfly McStandin of <Standard WoW NPCs>).

Oh man. You are in for a special treat my friend. I hope you enjoy kissing your free time good bye ;)
I was actually going to make a post about what some of you're favorite mini games were as I was talking with my old roommate about reforged.

I can't wait for: battleships, run kitty run, summoners, footies, wintermaul wars, tds, kodo tag, snipers/archers, maaaaybe dota (I played dota 1 for 7 years and LoL for 3. Burned out on mobas), and one of my favorites was an rpg called The Black Road where you played as characters fighting titans of old. Ah, I spent so many hours on battle.net.

Oh really? Though last time I got on pretty much the only maps going on was dota and the solo wintermaul.

Weren't no vampirism, island defense, defend the lich king, battle for azeroth, or other custom maps I enjoyed getting made
Which makes me wonder if Reforged and its prettier models might be a precursor to an eventual WoW 2.0. Wait until you get a load of me in blinding HD *hearteyes*.

It might, but I think Warcraft 4 will come first before World of Warcraft 2.0. But I think World of Starcraft might be made before WoW 2.0 in my opinion. But I have high hopes for where this remastered version will take the IP.
I'd also like to take the time to say this, Dota actually came from tides of blood.

Omg yes! Someone who knows!
WoW owes it's beginings to Everquest, which owes it's beginings to Ultima Online, which owes it's to MUDs.

Honestly, you could take that all the way back to Oog, inventor of the cave wall doodle if you were so inclined.

On topic, I'm mostly interested in seeing of WC3 2.0 has any major mechanical changes in terms of units/balance. One of the things I vaguely recall them saying stopping them from giving WC3 the SC treatment was it wasn't as meticulously balanced as SC2 was.

If that's true (and maybe I'm remembering that statement wrong), it could lead to some interesting implications in terms of the new version, which...

Yeah. Sure. Do it. A fresh coat of paint and a quicker engine is fine and good and I'm sure there'll be some purists who are fundamentally offended at the notion, but I maintain that WC3 was rough around the edges, and could benefit from more than just a face lift and modern frame.

What’s funny about that is that Reforged is still running on the same old WCIII engine, it’s just been souped up. Reforged players can even cross-play with original WCIII players.

In the Blizzcon panel they talked about how they had one of the old WoW engine guys pull a bunch of graphics features (shaders, dynamic shadows, etc) out of the WoW engine and graft it onto the WCIII engine in just a week or two thanks to the two games’ shared heritage.

Maybe we'll get HotS 2 with the new engine. I like HotS, but it's painfully clear that the engine it uses is crap.
