Hi everyone, I'm mostly looking for some RP help here with this thread. I'm an experienced RPer of over a decade, and for the past few years I've been doing most of my RP on Final Fantasy XIV, but due to a few reasons I decided to make the swap over to WoW. I was mostly wondering - for people who have RP'd in both WoW and FFXIV - what the main differences are. I'm not looking for lore help, character help, TRP3 help, or anything like that.
1. In FFXIV most combat RP is done through the /roll system, similar to a DnD campaign: the person with the highest roll wins the attack, and the posts are written accordingly. Is this true for WoW as well?
2. Dungeon and """world""" RP isn't much of a thing in FFXIV, outside of a few groups. Mostly you just see people RPing in the Quicksand (the FFXIV equivalent of Goldshire). Is this different for WoW?
3. What's the status of events? Is there a good website or discord to join to get information on RP events going on? Mostly asking about Horde side events, or cross-faction events, if those even exist.
4. Branching off the previous question, is it generally more common to find big tabletop-style GM'd events, or is it more of a free for all (not negatively).
5. Just any general big differences you can think of between WoW RP culture and FFXIV RP culture. Not too much looking for the little things, more like BIG things that jump out at you immediately.
6. On FFXIV, if you didn't have a tumblr for your RP character you were pretty much screwed with trying to make connections and things like that. Tumblr was a BIG thing among RPers there. Is it similar in WoW RP?
We play on Horde side, so mostly looking for Horde-specific advice, but any Alliance insight is also welcomed. Thank you!
1: Usually yes, though some guilds and groups use their own 'systems' to make them more interesting and help you apply the unique aspects of your character to combat. Different guilds handle this differently. I've never seen one get anywhere near as complex as an actual D&D game, but they usually do sprinkle in a little extra to make it more than 'highest roll wins'.
2 & 6: I feel like WoW is much more built for RP. We have servers specifically dedicated to RP, public and walk-up RP are common (though mostly limited to major cities), and we have a plethora of addons that help facility RP that allow you to display your character's full name, titles, backstory and descriptions all in game.
3: Individual guilds handle their own events. For community events, these forums are regularly updated when those are planned. They'll usually give you a run down of the event and who to contact (whether it be in game or Discord) to secure a spot for yourself.
4. That depends on whether the event is centered around combat or social. The former will generally be tabletop-style, while a social will be free for all (unless someone includes an element that requires rolls).
5. The RP community is larger and more public than FFXIV. Probably the most notable difference.
