I miss the old lore, everything went off the rails after MoP.
Humans good.
Orcs bad.
Burning Legion worst.
Bring it back to the basics.

Go to classic then
The story’s always been a bit messy, but yeah, there are so many factions, magic types, and various doodads and relics that change the course of things that it’s all kind of become white noise to me.
I’m pretty bored of epic quests being “We need pieces of stuff to make the thingy that will intercept and locate the other thingy to the stop the third thingy before it does stuff to people that then come and do other stuff to other people. With thingys!”
Honestly, kind of just sounds like a description of the current crafting system.
Art imitates life.
Wrong.
Old WoW lore is garbage.
We don’t need ye olde orcs vs. humans, but the new storylines have been very sanitized - I want more blood, betrayal, and political intrigue.
Put some spice in the pot please. I want to GASP (not like Tyrion Fordring, RIP).
I want to see an actual relic called The Macguffin. We don’t know what it does, but we need it to win.
…that’s not what Vanilla through WotLK said. Heck, not what Warcraft 3 said.
You’re talking about the Warcraft 1 & 2 story!
WC3 through WotLK (and arguably Cata) was this:
Alliance full of hypocrites but still good.
Horde full of rejected underdogs but still good.
The Burning Legion — the absolute worst.
That is the original WoW story.
This is vastly oversimplifying WoW lore with and prior to MoP while vastly overcomplicating modern WoW Lore (barring Shadowlands which has a ton of weird shenanigans no one liked).
You can boil down TWW to “Void worser worst”, which of course is what would follow after we effectively beat the Burning Legion.
Xally is just trying to bring world eater void bro here. So we fight. And in all liklihood that’s the plot for the entire Worldsoul Saga.
It’s almost like you can only write so much with 3 factions going to war against themselves so many times
I don’t know if I would say it went off the rails. I mean, there was pretty natural story progression after MoP, where after the Siege of Orgrimmar…
The only then-known uncorrupted black dragon, Wratheon, worked with a crazy bronze dragon, Kairoz, to break Garrosh out of jail before he could be judged by pandaren gods for war crimes, where they escape through a new Dark Portal that Kairoz made that would go back in time 30 years to a parallel universe Draenor rather than our Draenor. Garrosh would save his parallel-universe dad there, Grom, who leads a new Horde that we defeat in two patches, leading to Gul’dan taking control and imprisoning Grom, who we then save.
Only for parallel universe Archimonde (who may or may not be the same as the real Archimonde, due to Blizzard saying each demon exists simultaneously in all dimensions) to send parallel universe Gul’dan back to our world in the present to open a new portal for demons. Which, after a long series of battles, culminates in us beating up the soul of a planet to power up a spaceship of the titans to beam up Sargeras, but not before he stabs our planet with a big sword.
Okay, maybe it went a little off the rails. Like, a smidge.
That’s what the Arathi were invented for.
They are cooking, I’m looking forward to their inevitable bloody betrayal.
(Also, if they’re recruiting I’ll hand in my Paladin resume…)
I feel like things started going “off the rails” back in Wrath actually, which was the first time we killed one of the Aspects. That is where it kinda started taking the “magic” out of the setting in an attempt to, what is commonly referred to today as, “subverting expectations”.
We started down that road of killing Aspects, having the Titans be “bad guys”, gods are actually robots, all of that started back then. Maybe they originally had a good idea for killing off the Aspects and making a story out of that but yes somewhere along the way it went completely off the rails.
Which is what usually happens when the writers want to “subvert expectations” instead of just telling a good story. It turns to
I just smash monsters when I’m told.
I don’t even know what the story is really about and I don’t actually care.
I don’t even know where we are in the universe right now, I don’t know if Khaz Algar is under Azeroth or wth it is, I assume it’s under us, but I don’t really know for sure.
Still having fun though.
Uh oh somebody doesn’t know the lore
It seems very simple to me. Everything that happened was done by the Jailer, because void?
Its a Blom thread.
So the lore doesnt matter. Its just Alliance good, horde bad.
NGL, that sounds awesome. Rather that than, mysterious maguffin, planet talking to us, 2 dimensional elf lady mad cause mad. Dragon happy land fun time cupcake simulator.
Wrong.
