Wow Story and Lore?

Do players pay any attention to the stories in Wow and the lore anymore? Or do most players these days just follow quest markers and run dungeons at speed. Either ignoring the story and lore or totally oblivious to it?

Just depends on the mood really.

the story and lore are written by amateurs who care more for other matters than the game.

I don’t really read most quests now because an NPC says everything the quests are relevant to. They also don’t need to tell the player vague directions.

Follow NPC who is talking about an evil force, we stop outside evil force place… I wonder what lore I can gleam from this quest to kill 10 of the evil force that hasn’t been said on our walk there.

I do, some people call the story bad or writing poor, and sometimes I agree but overall its entertaining and reading quest text is often funny or interesting to me. I like the characters, the setting, and the stuff that happens in it.

I like following the lore, but I feel like the questing experience is a bit too disjointed to truly understand the whole story. So finding those lore youtubers helps a lot.

The players who are the most vocal in the forums, which is a small fraction of the player base, seem to mostly focus on m+ and raids. What the majority thinks, who knows? After all they never enter notes into forums.

Overall, yes.

People might not read quests but they are definitely watching and reacting to the cutscenes.

In general, I’ll pay at least minor to moderate attention to the main story, especially early on, but my interest tends to wane quickly if I didn’t go into already very interested, or if nothing ends up strongly grabbing my interest.

Also, if I feel it’s needed for rp, I may look something up that I wasn’t organically appraised of or otherwise missed.

I should also mention this specifically goes for events that have occurred in recent years; pretty much anything from Shadowlands forward.

I actively ignore it whenever I can. However the story for the main questline in DF wasn’t so bad.

Depends if the quest is interesting. If it is all cuddles and love or taking photos for a Gnome resort then nope.

If it is faction based conflict or delving into dark magic then I’m glued to every word.

Yes. I read the quests, at least the first half dozen times I do them and try to be the character i am playing in the story.

If it was all meta, I would be seeking out other games. At the moment it seems borderline to me, given how they have handled things recently.

I do not have high hopes for TWW at the moment.

I don’t know about “most players” but I read all the quest text (the first time through) and the setting/story/lore is the main reason I’m still playing. That’s rare for me; I’m usually much more focused on excellent/fun system design. But WoW got me hooked on a world I actually care about.
