Wow Shadowlands confusion: Need some helpful clarity to avoid making some game destroying mistakes!

Hello! So, my reason for asking for help here is as the subject states, to simply avoid making a big mistake. I stopped playing during BfA, came back for classic, stopped for a year again, and now just came back to retail. So, I wanted to enjoy the Shadowlands content and get the Covenant mounts, and be able to use them across all my characters.

So this is where a bit of confusion comes. Please let me know which parts of this are correct and not correct! From what I understand,

  1. Once I get a character to level 80 renowned with 1 covenant, than ALL of my alts can use the mounts I have on that level 80, and I can buy the ā€˜renown booster’ item from Oribos for alts to instantly boost their renown up. Correct?
  2. Then when I use the booster on an alt, I will instantly get all the mounts that are free from the renown levelups that I skipped, Correct?
  3. I still have to do the Shadowlands campaign stuff that takes place BEFORE I pick a covenant on ALL of my alts, so I cant use the renown booster until I redo that pre-covenant questline, right? Or is there a way to skip doing the pre-covenant selection content?
  4. Once I finish the entire covenant campaign on my main, level 80 renown, and finish stage 3 of the Chains of Domination questline (which ends with the quest In Need of Assistance according to Wowhead) then I will get the flying in Shadowlands ability on ALL of my alts?
  5. I can not stay level 80 renowned on 1 character for all 4 covenants, to have the mounts be account wide, I lose the renown if I change covenants right? So I can’t just level 1 to 80, then switch and buy the booster on the same character. I will lose my renown and have to start over on Kyrian if I switch to Night Fae for example? So If I want to make all the mounts account wide, I need to have 4 characters each reach level 80?

Hopefully I asked these things in a manner that’s easy to understand, and that is not too much to read. I just want to make sure I can get all the mounts plus unluck flying, and be able use them on all my characters. That is the goal here! I assume I need 4 total wow characters to do this. Thank you for reading and for any help that can be given!

Yes, it boosts them up to 60.

I… think so? Honestly there might be a restriction on whether you have to have already had a character at 80 in that Covenant before you can use it. I’m not sure on that one.

I think they took out Threads of Fate so I guess you probably have to do the whole campaign now. Sorry, it’s dumb.

No, you retain your Renown with a Covenant when you switch.

  1. Yes, they can, and yes you can buy the renown boost, but it’s only to renown 60, not 80, so you’d need to earn 20 renown.
2.Yes, you’ll get whichever renown 40 mount is offered from the renown boost.
  2. You can skip the SL questline and do threads of fate on a character that is 60 or higher. They changed it in the beginning of DF, so you can no longer do threads of fate on characters lvling through SL for the record.
    4.Yes that is correct.
5.They switched it so you can swap covenants and not lose renown, but you’ll lose anima I’m pretty sure and the covenant upgrades you did. You can do it all on one character now, but it doesn’t hurt to have 4(I’m an altoholic so I have a problem haha)

Nah everything gets saved when you switch. The Covenants don’t share Anima pools but you’ll have what you had in Venthry, for example, if you switch somewhere else and then go back. There’s no penalty for switching.

Threads of fate got retired with the release of DF.

For lvling character. If your character is 60 or higher, you can do threads. I have done it on alts since SL.

Thanks so much for the help guys! I’m already near 60 with Kyrian and just figured Id make sure before I do something stupid. I’d read so much stuff but, a lot of it was older, and I knew from asking around that they’d changed certain things (like the threads of fate thing, being able to skip) and I was hearing multiple things from different people. I’ll just have to try it and see if it works, wouldn’t mind at least having a 2nd toon to do some of it with. If not than at least the campaign stuff isn’t super hard, especially leveling to 61 and buying the BOE blues, makes it easier to grind out

If your goal is to get as many cosmetics as possible, I’d focus on one Covenant first - getting all ā€œbuildingsā€ upgraded to Rank 3 substantially increases your anima gains, which you’re going to need an obscene amount of.

Like, truly obscene. It’s disgusting how much anima it takes to get everything.

Hah. Maybe you can help me understand what all of those things do, as far as getting me cosmetics? Like, I’m assuming then that there’s mounts and stuff that you need the command table or whatever its called for? And I know you can get a low odds drop chance from the anima conductor, I got that one, and got a pet so far but thats it. But now Im saving my anima to just buy the purchasable mounts. Still need 12500 total for the 2 I dont have yet. So gonna use my anima for that before anything else, unless there’s a way to earn it way faster with the command table?

Yeah there’s four or so I think? There’s an addon called Venture Plan (it got discontinued so you’ll have to Google for it, it’s not on Curse) that’ll make it brainless to do, but it’ll take a while.

Like I said, I’d make sure all of your covenant features are upgraded to level three before you start using anima for anything else.

As far as finding all of the cosmetics, I’d recommend the AllTheThings addon. It’ll break it down and tell you what’s where, and you can look something specific up on Wowhead if that isn’t clear.

Here is my suggestion, as someone who also skipped SL and came back and did it.

Don’t worry so much about getting everything ā€œnowā€. Finish your SL story, get flying. It will make doing daily stuff SO MUCH FASTER.

Get it to where you get to go to zereth mortis, do that, get flying there. The amount of anima I can get there in an hour with flying beats everything else. You get it from chests and killing rares. Before you get flying, all the 70s on their flying mounts will beat you to everything and rares die really fast when a 70 is involved.

I got flying this week. In about an hour I can get about 2000-3000 anima from just collecting chests and killing rares. I honestly haven’t found anything in the rest of SL that is that easy for that much anima.

Also, I see you are only 64…might be easier to go do DF stuff, get to 70, get a decent ilvl to come back and crush SL content.

For renown: do torghast. It was the fastest and easiest way to get renown for me. I got to 80 before I got flying.

Oh, yeah I didn’t even think about that. Yeah obviously get flying asap

Spamming Torghast 18s on a reasonably geared max level can come kinda close.

I continue to be confused about this, because Blizzard themselves say very clearly that you cant do ToF now. It’s support article - which is very current - says:

The Threads of Fate Campaign skip in Shadowlands is no longer available for leveling or max-level characters.

Any characters who have already chosen Threads of Fate prior to Dragonflight will be able to finish it. However, characters who never initiated Threads of Fate will be restricted only to the zone-by-zone Covenant campaign for Shadowlands.

I mean…maybe its bugged and they just haven’t addressed that issue?? I know I tried on a character that had not started it prior to DF and I couldn’t access ToF.

I am not sure. I haven’t been able to access Threads on any character below 60. On my characters that are 60 or higher, I have been able to access it.

The renown booster can only be used on level 50 or higher characters. So fresh alts cannot use it.

I purposelly stopped doing anything that would really give me exp at 64 cause I didn’t want to level up too high and have it be way too easy. Plus, this way I don’t need to worry about not having gear and whatnot yet, since your stat %'s lower as you level up with the same stat bonus totals. I appreciate the tips though I’ve been doing just that, finishing the covenant story, now doing the chains of dom stuff so I can fly, I can use mounts in The Maw now, don’t know anything about ZM yet but I’m sure I’ll be there soon. Renown is ridiculously easy to level now also, already at 70! I’m clueless about some things still but, just trying to avoid googling everything now way ahead of time, then forgetting it, then having to search and read up on it or watch youtube guides again later

Oh and Im not sure why but I cant reply to more than 1 person in a row, seems weird… ā€˜wait for others to participate before replying’ seems odd lol. But, for Sardorim, That would make sense, no point in a level 1 using it anyways. I’ve got so many 50 alts from the BFA days anyways, would be easy to just do dungeons for a few hours in chromie time to 60, then use the renown booster!
