The way WoW is set-up now, it optimizes level gains to get characters to the end game quicker, so that players can join in on Raids, new expansion content, etc. However, it makes it difficult to play through and enjoy older expansions at a more leisurely rate, as you generally outlevel the Timewalking campaign before you finish the second area in a given expansion. While it would not be practical to rebalance the entire game around players who wish to run old content, there are some options that could be put in place to make that a more appealing playstyle.
- The NPCs available that can turn XP Gain on or off could be expanded with different functions. Namely, they could be improved to give a set of options for XP gain between 0 and 100%. That way, players could chose a more leisurely leveling experience instead of having to manually toggle XP gain frequently, or risk outleveling the content they are doing. These NPCs could also be expanded to offer a level cap to aim for. Upon meeting that set cap, it could shut off XP gain automatically until you decide to turn it back on. This would enable a smoother leveling experience through old content without the risk of outleveling the Timewalking feature. Thus enabling players to complete an entire prior expansion before being ushered into the newer content.
- The second issue with running older content is that everything that came out for that expansion is thrown at the players all at once when they reach the main city for the expansion. While it is nice to have all the options available for those that want them, the ability to toggle a more Guided Quest Feature would be beneficial. This feature, if enabled, could hide certain quests until your current character completes prior quests in the timeline. This would enable players to replay old expansions in a more linear format, without requiring a guide through WoWHead or other forms, and without causing confusion as to what point in the story players are in.
By adding the above features, Blizzard can once again appeal to players that want to enjoy a more relaxing experience as they enjoy older content without disrupting the normal gameplay of other players who would like to catch up to end game content. This would also serve to pull some players back to retail and enjoy the content instead of waiting for Classic to reach their desired Expansion to enjoy the story again.
