WoW needs to be better at telegraphing mob abilities

Having done the revamped versions of Kara and the WoD Dungeons this season, it’s made one of WoW’s biggest problem abundantly clear: lack of clear indicators for NPC attacks.

This issue is exacerbated by:

  • playing in melee
  • having multiple melee
  • fighting npcs that also have loud visuals
  • playing with classes that have loud visuals
  • m+ affixes that also have ground effects (sanguine, quaking, etc.)
  • uneven ground surfaces or textures completely covering up mechanics
  • ground mechanics with fuzzy edges

When a few of these factors are combined, it makes it almost impossible to respond to mechanics because they are simply obscured. Addons and graphical settings can help with this to some degree but do not completely remove the problem.

For example, the ground effects from the new fated affix in Kara (hallway before maiden) can actually go under rug. The same goes for the puddles in the beginning of Tazavesh Gambit.

Players should not need 20/10 and x-ray vision to play the game. One way to deal with this would be to apply the outline mode that’s already in the game and apply it to ground mechanics in such a way that they have a higher strata than all other effects, thus ensuring that they’re always visible.

I’m sure Blizz can think of other ways too, but the important thing is to address these problems because it severely reduces enjoyment of the game when you’re getting killed by things that are difficult to spot, even when you’re paying attention.

you do enough dungeons all these things that you’re complaining about becomes second nature.

100% Agree. Your entire post is spot on. Between forcing the group together which covers ground effects and the terrain hiding ground effects…being melee right now is brutal.

I’d very much like them to integrate way more markers and aoe callouts ingame rather than having to use addons.

You can definitely be more defensive about it with experience but sometimes movement and positioning are out of your control since that’s up to the tank.

It’s also interesting that this feedback comes from a range spec because all these issues are infinitely less of a problem as a range. Playing my range characters vs my melee characters this season is literally this meme:

Agreed, the game could be doing a much better at communicating combat information in general.

i play mele fotm on my monk lol some of the best dungeon classes right now ARE mele

Lots of upper Karazhans for me have been nearly ruined because of people dying to invisible explosions from the bats. It’s impossible to tell on the slopes if you’re in the radius and half of the indicators aren’t even visible.

yeah i will say kara was released an absolute mess with the clipping and pets breaking flame wreath.

Honestly the sleep puddles are the worst part of this entire affix, they are both tiny and go under the surface of things constantly. With it also being purple on purple or a dark color which a lot of the floors are. I hate those puddles and especially how punishing they are when you can’t see them half the time with the 5 second sleep.

Need to send a zone wide message that covers a good portion of your screen of the Boss shouting

"Oh My Goobersnakx! Iʻm About to do THE THING! Yʻall better do something about it!"

Yeah, there’s nothing about the sleep puddles that makes the dungeons more engaging.

“Oh, I got put to sleep by a circle I couldn’t even see.”

Can we really consider a bug an issue with telegraphing?

Honestly, I’d rather take WoW’s lack of telegraphing over FF14’s server tick/delay. Seeing yourself outside of a pool of fire but still get hit is infuriating. And no, it’s not fun to get used to either. Not when you have WoW’s reactiveness.

Though, can’t say I’d mind WoW having more telegraphing, but I don’t want brain dead stuff either. That’s a hard line to draw.

What is sanguine blocking you from seeing?

The caltrops from Iron Docks looks like it was made in 1950 where ground effects was not a thing.

It doesn’t help that Blizzard is sloppy with positioning of effects as well.
Sometimes you will be CLEARLY out of something and still get tagged by it.

sanguine in grimrail is some wild stuff. idk how mele works in there. plus all the frontals.

Turning down spell effects is a huge help to me. Playing on max settings is fun once the level becomes second nature anyways, but when I’m accurately making steps where I dont remember why would I need clarity on every detail.

Totally, those things show their age and then some.

Grimrail is definitely one of the worst cases, but even that place could be improved if the game provided better visual cues.

I’ve lowered the spell density setting but it’s still not a full proof solution and honestly the game loses some of its charm. We already have the improved telegraphs in the more recent expansions, they just have to be added to the older content and also set to override player effects.

If there is something on the ground that can kill me, I’d like to be able to see it even when there’s a whole raid going apesh*t on top of it.
