WoW needs a reworked new player experience

I’ve tried to bring new people to the game, but they never stay after the Exile questline, especially when they learn how much lore there is to swallow in order to enjoy all the quests and stories.

Exiles Reach IS the reworked new player experience.

Although I agree. I still think they should have an optional new player play/theater event (like SLs) or questline that highlights the big lore moments for new players. Could even be a series of Caverns of Time dungeons.

this is a great idea, any way that teaches relevant stuff before throwing loads of storylines out of context

i always warn folks away, due to how much of my life this game has consumed. and those that try the game anyway tend to leave after i save them from being forced into BfA.

Once the war within is over and isle of dorn becomes the new default they can watch the recap cutscene from legion to now and the Worldsoul saga.

This seems like a little bit of a ridicuolous complaint; The game is 20 years old so there is going to be tons and tons of lore for new players to sift through no matter what you do.

The best solution would be for you as a friend to take them to specific ones after you give them a broad overview of what the expansion is about, as well as giving them a link to the Wiki and of course reminding them to read the quests if they want to know what to do.

lol wow is a 20 year old game. no new player is coming! the game is gonna die together with all the 40 yo that raised

There’s still new players who come and try the game. The problem is we have a terrible new player experience that destroys their desire to play after a few days.

yes because people don’t like mmo rpgs in 2024, we are dinosaurs

Wait til they learn Blizz keeps a lot of it behind books.

That’s why whenever i meet a new player i tell them to ignore the story at all costs. I tell them to do just like me and the majority of players and never read any quest text and don’t watch any cutscenes, also the story sucks even if you know what’s happening. Just play for the end game.

I mean, I agree that WoW could use a reworked beginner/leveling experience. The way I think it should be done would require a lot of work, so I don’t really expect it to be done. I don’t really understand though, why people who are interested in questing and stories would be complaining about how many quests and stories there are… although as I’m writing this and thinking about what happens after Exile’s Reach, maybe I can see what the problem is.

These days, you leave Exile’s Reach and immediately you get the “Heroes of the alliance” invitation to the dragon isles and everyone calling you “champion” and treating you as if you’re the second coming of Uther Lightbringer even though they haven’t really done anything worthy of that respect. They go to save the dragonflights, even though they have no idea who or what Khadgar or Wrathion/Ebyssion are etc. So for people who are interested in lore, I think this skip might present some dissonance.

P.S.: so I think the “problem” felt by the O.P.'s friends likely has to do with the transition from being a new “recruit” to being “The Champion”.

I think the issue is it treats players as though wow is their first game ever and I can’t really see that as ever but rarely being the case.

Who picks a subscription mmo with expansions as a first game?

I would argue the content should be tuned around a heroic dungeon level of difficulty from the start.

Exile Reach is TuT island from OSRS remade into WoW. It is just a taste. But I get the feel. I see new players feeling so confused on whats even going on in the story. And they need some dude on youtube to explain it all to them now. No hate to the Youtuber on this game you guys are the only reason its still going <3

better yet, blizzard makes some lovely high detail cinematics of the bigger moments in wow’s history

What they could do is have a new Chromie Time leveling option where she takes you through all the zones from beginning to end with a few quests in each. It would be set up so a new player could see the history while learning the mechanics of their class.

I like how the Exiles Reach “Warrior training” consists of an NPC knocking you back an telling you to charge in three times, and a ghost telling you to execute at low health. There you go, you’ve learned Warrior.

Personally it’s the community, people do not talk anymore really, unless you find a good guild but it’s fair and few and I miss talking in the world with people

Have you tried teaching them?

I have a modest proposal, though I’m not sure how new players would actually like it.

It was inspired by my experience of Norway In A Nutshell, which is a travel package where you take trains, buses, and ferries around different parts of Norway, never staying long in one place.

WoW In A Nutshell: A Proposed Leveling Experience For New Players

Goal: Familiarize players with the story and with their class in a quick, fun, educational manner.

Structure:

  • Each segment of WoW In A Nutshell contains five scenarios (each with a companion selected from the lore of the expansion), capped off by a final boss fight with a group of AI-powered lead characters from the expansion.

  • Talents are explained at the start of the leveling process, and at the end of each scenario, players can choose their own talents or have their talents selected for them.

  • New abilities are highlighted, explained, and the key binding process is laid out tutorial-style.

  • No worrying about grinding mobs or purchasing gear – each scenario (plus end boss fight) rewards an appropriate amount of experience and gear, plus some gold and transmog.

  • By the end of each expansion, you automatically reach the target level.

Expansions:

1-10: Exile’s Reach

11-20: Artificial Vanilla Flavor

21-30: The Learning Crusade

31-40: Lich King Nostalgia Tour

41-45: Cataclysm Mini ™

46-50: Checklists of Pandaria

51-55: Legion Express: A Tale of Two Dans (Illidan, Gul’dan)

56-60: Tattle On Azeroth

61-65: Shadowbanned

66-70: Dragon-Lite ™
