It’s the one game that everyone has been playing for almost 20 years and is stronger today than any other game made. What media or cultural phenomena has ever achieved that? Mathematically, in terms of numbers, Wow is a supernova and the average mmorpg is just a gas station in Idaho. Put all games into the equation and we see Wow is the galaxy and the average game is a particle on a streamer’s thinning hair.
I wholeheartedly agree. Blizzard has done a phenomenal job with delivering a time-tested game that continues to churn out engaging high-quality content. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Good to be alive in 2021!
Agree and disagree.
Depends if you see the expansions that you pay full cost of a new game for as a new game or not.
The game certainly isnt classic and that game was garbage by today’s standards so that’s good.
You can disagree qualitatively, but quantitatively it’s an objective truth.
Pac-man is the greatest game ever made, though a good Minesweeper argument could be had. As far as MMOs go, I am not touching that because there are some diehard EQ and UO people out there.
Technically, Tetris is far older and has been played by far more people. There are several other examples that are also true. For example, the original Doom games from the 90s still have a large player base and a very active modding community. Not WoW sized, granted, but I’d bet 10s of millions of people have played those game at one point or another.
If we limit it to the mmo market, I agree with you. It falls behind in some other markets though.
Only if you take the games entire history into account.
If SL was a stand alone game it would be in the bargain bin.
Eehhh I would have to disagree.
If i was stuck on as island and using wow for help wasn’t an option… I’d probably rather play animal crossing
I mean, this much is true. WoW was and to some extent still is a total anomaly in the MMORPG market. The market as a whole, sans WoW, is STILL fairly niche. It’s not something that’s unprofitable or anything, but compared to the big boys, it’s niche, and not something most people would step foot into if it weren’t for WoW being the anomaly that it is.
And even now, it’s pretty clear the genre is past its prime. Devs have moved on. There are no more “WoW Killers”, because no one wants to take on the risk involved in developing an MMORPG when it’s clear that they’re not going to get the numbers WoW got.
But it’s also clear that WoW is slowly approaching the baseline for “successful MMO”. As far as anyone knows, it’s still well above that, but once its there, the genre is well and truly on course for fading into obscurity, given a bit more time.
That’s not to say that WoW’s history isn’t insane though. Because it is.
I definitely have to both agree and disagree. I certainly have always come back to WoW, but here has been plenty of issues with it as well. But certainly as games that have me coming back and always having a blast, its one of the few major ones.
I’d say (currently) my top 3 games i always come back to play are
- WoW
- Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
- Warframe
All of these have had their issues (in MAGS, its mostly due to i dont have friends to play with) but both the mmorpgs have their ups and downs, but always an absolute blast!
This right here is how a normal, smart, and rational person disagrees! Kudos to you for being a stellar example to all the ff14 players trolling the forums. I actually want to play those games now.
Man the copium in these forums is insane.
The maximum number of accounts ever created for wow is 110 million. The overwhelming majority of those accounts have not been played in literally years. And the population of the world is…?
How appropriate to describe this game as a supernova, which is the catastrophic death of a star.
If I had to pick one game for GOAT. It would be original doom.
It pretty much gave birth to all 1st person shooters.
This has me rolling
Come on dude. Everyone knows Skyrim is the GOAT.
Supernova’s last almost 1,000,000 years. Nice try slohmoh
If length of play is the determining factor id wager that Heroes of Might and Magic 4 is the greatest of all time. People still regularly play and there are forums and groups out there etc…
Tic Tac Toe is the greatest game ever made.
Followed by Pong as the greatest video game ever made.
Then Ultima Online as the greatest mmo.
Blizz is the greatest mmo by originally showing that mmos didn’t need to be exp. grindfests and having Tauren.
