No one should have to read a book to understand what’s going on. Just as Wiltonal said, it’s a subscription based game with a price for the expansions. If they can’t make things clear in game for all to understand, they are doing it wrong. Hopefully they will be able to dump excess baggage after this expansion and move on. I’m tired of important characters, and entire factions, having to be dumb in order for the story to progress.
Excuse me the alliance are the ones who bombed the Goblin trading ship for no reason other than “no witnesses”
Lore is the real reason I play this game, as I follow Warcraft since its first incarnation. I would be playing any other games otherwise.
And it’s really sad to me to see how they treat such legendary characters, without any regards for the established story, only caring about personal preferences.
It’s my job, so pretty effected.
Lore is important to me, in terms of seeing/reading it, not as far as restricting player options because of it.
As in, I’ve played every warcraft from 1, 2 & 3 with respective expansions, and WoW from every expansion BC and on, did all the zones, and including old world pre-cata revamps and post-cata to see and read all the quests for the lore, have also read all the books.
I love new expansions for the new quests and lore to see and read/learn, etc… so in general I enjoy the lore and it is important to me.
But that said, I don’t feel there is a need to restrict what people can be because of it.
Blizzard has stated player characters are unique special members of their race, they aren’t the average joe. So not so much for lore reasons being given for restricting what others can play, so they cannot be playing whatever race they feel most connected with or that they feel would most fit any specific character, when the player character is a unique above average individual of their race.
I cared about lore until WotLK. After that, over time it started getting more complicated and convoluted, and became hard to keep track and follow. I finally just gave up on it.
It is way more important than I thought. Shadowlands brought that front and center to me. It is a grand story to be sure but the telling of it in game fell far too short for me (If that makes any sense). So it makes me wonder if I should stop playing the game and just read the books.
In the past the stories had a flow to them, you could second guess and kinda see what was going to happen. In this expansion not a whole lot made any sense to me. Seems like going to see a standup comic and he is just telling you punch lines. Of course, you have to wait a while for each punch line to be told.
Back in original, it was pretty interesting, the first quests, the first exposure. After a few expansions, I really don’t care that much about the lore anymore. Keep in mind I wasn’t big on lore ever, it was just so new in the beginning, and you had to read the quests to know what to do etc. Now its just click and smash.
It’s like Disney destroying beloved characters. It still leaves a bad taste in your mouth being force fed trash.
The lore is very critical to me. The whole concept of the Shadowlands I find particularly bad. At least how it has been presented so far.
It has made playing any of the zones in Shadowlands unpleasant. It has also made any quests involving death in other areas worse too.
Even if people don’t pay attention to lore, I believe it impacts them. If it is very bad or incoherent I think it hurts the overall feel of play.
No real interest in the lore. But I do always watch the cinematics one time, then cancel them on alts. That’s why I don’t mind when they change up stuff and “mess up the lore”. I just blow it off and play what is there and don’t let it bother me.
Yep, that’s me too.
Wow lore is why I play the game , outside of playing a living world with a living community and it makes those two things possible. Steve is single handedly killing lore. Man is ruining my entire experience. He’s gotta go.
Without lore, immersion is impossible. Without immerse, interaction with the game is reduced to a study of its systems and gaming loops… which haven’t been great as of late.
For context purposes, I appreciate the overall gist of what’s going on.
That’s about it.
I mostly see it as flavoring. At the end of the day I’m here for gameplay and silly shananagins.
Like I’m not going to quit over story, but I’ll scream from the roof tops how stupid I think it is.
Like lost a round of “are you dumber than 5th grader” bad. Like ruined the good will of a 20 year old IP bad.
Like that…
i just want badass cinematics with WOW characters
insane cinematics + decent lore >> decent cinematic + insane lore
As some others, played the original games, read the books, played WoW since BC, read every quest etc…
Lore is important to me, the quests and story is what WoW is, you take that away and all you have is ‘endgame treadmill simulator’, and those that play for just that are those that will often not be fully engaged with the game, get burned out quickly or just ‘raid log’ and not truly enjoy the game.
Part of why while chromie time and the fast leveling now is convenient, it also truly makes me sad. All the new players from now are are being rushed to the before mentioned endgame treadmill simulator, and often may never see the depths of story and lore there is WoW, unless they go out of their way and the designed path, to experience it.
Not at all. been playing since vanilla and could not care less about lore at all.
No idea why we are here, dont care why we are here.
Just like to hit things and clear content and get purps.
all the lore i know is lich king commands zombies and sits on cold chair
Wow lore is what brought me here in the first place. Night Elf Lore especially.
Imagine me now, someone who came for the Night Elf Lore.
