I was trying to show you that Blizzard has been doing cross promotions, exactly the types you said, going back to the early days of WoW and we still don’t have advertisements in game or on the launcher (other than Activision-Blizzard games or events). Even those get push back because people don’t want to see adverts for games they don’t play (esp Activision ones).
That laptop promo was 2007. If this trickle were going to lead to adds, Blizz would already have done it.
Blizzard has been doing promotions with brands for in-game (and out of game) items for over a decade. If we were going to get in-game product placement we’d have already seen it years ago.
The closest WoW has ever gotten to in-game product placement are the Blizzcon flags that appear on the exclusive items you get from attending Blizzcon.
You mean the “Blizzcon” banners some pets/mounts have? Those are mostly souvenirs but I guess they could be seen as advertising Blizzcon.
I just don’t understand the “outrage” about something that is an insanely common practice and has been since before WoW existed. Cross promotions with other companies is age old.
The helms and such will probably be back in the store in some form again sometime too. WoW 20th anniversary bundles or something. Whatever the promotions and marketing teams thing might be nice.
Yeah, those. Personally I don’t see it as advertising, because it’s not like they’re extremely obvious or highlighting the next event. It’s just a bit of minor recognition.
But that’s really as close as its ever gotten. There aren’t any Mountain Dew drinks or vending machines in WoW. No banners for Evian Water, no goblins wearing Gamespot shirts etc and they’ll never appear in WoW either. Blizzard isn’t going to shatter the immersion of WoW players by taking them out of the game with real world product placement.
And yeah I don’t get the outrage either. This is honestly just proof that people in this community need to be angry at Blizzard for ‘something’ even if that something is completely harmless and not worth getting upset over.
Makes me wonder if they act this way outside of the forums/game as well. Are they legit walking into stores that put things on deep discounts and raging at them because they had to buy it at full price months ago?
They DO have nods to a lot of pop culture in game though - movies, music, TV series, famous people, etc. Those are usually veiled though and if you don’t know about it, you don’t pick up on it. It is always kind of fun to try to figure out what the Devs were thinking of.
There are a ton of items and NPCs that use names of, or similar names to, community figures, employees, friends, family, etc. Again, if you don’t know the person or reference, you won’t pick up on most of it.
You can kill Mirasol in Diablo 3 (name is in the random name generator for yellow mobs) for example but the D3 folks don’t know me by that name.
Some do…which is really sad. If I want my winter coat at the start of winter I buy it at full price. If I want it cheap, I wait and see if it goes on sale after winter is over. I don’t rage that there was sale later or try to return it.
Blizzard is actually pretty good about sales. If someone JUST bought something and it goes on sale the next day, Blizz will often let a person refund it and get it for the sale price, or credit the difference to the Bnet account as Balance to apply later for a sub or something.
I’m so happy! that my helmet that I buy for an limited time be given away with a promotion.
My happiness is so great that I won’t be able to repay Blizzard in 3 lives!!!
I am actually indifferent to the practice. I vote with my subscription. But, I can see some people feeling the need to get prime to get 3 transmogs. And not liking the fact that the game they pay a premium monthly to, offers items to players for subscribing to prime. Maybe some players have boycotted prime for some reason. Maybe players prefer walmart plus, sams club, target or costco to prime. It’s just an odd promotion that is probably well intentioned. But, I don’t see an exclusive offer to the few being popular with most.
How is it unfair? They’re still paying for them with a prime sub. You kids are so sensitive these days, thinking you’re owed something because you bought it years ago. /eyeroll
Honestly, I just wish they gave us a redemption code - I already have the Firelord Crown, so claiming it would do nothing. But if I could gift it to someone I would. X_X
Exactly where I’m at with it, does nothing for me. But I’d give them to a friend.
If that’s what you gathered from that, seek help. The whole chase of having cool mogs is having something unique, didn’t get much more unique than something they weren’t selling anymore.
