WoW is making my computer turn itself off and back on at random

Hi!

I am having an issue where WoW is making my computer crash and reboot itself. No blue screen, no error message, nothing. I had the BIOS updated to the most recent version and it was stressed tested with no issues, but it just did it again a few minutes ago. I have reason to suspect it’s WoW, since I didn’t have an issue with any other game I played today or program I’ve used. I get an “Event 41: Kernel Power” issue in the event viewer, but I have no clue what that means.

dxdiag for you:

it sounds that the PSU (power supply) has a fault that makes the computer reboot. the PSU is going to have problems if it’s to old, does not have enough power in watts (like 550w or more some systems. GPU (graphics card) can draw more power than normal. looking at your CPU and GPU you might need a 600w or more PSU

edit the game can be more taxing than most programs that you might run

Hmm, this is a relatively new issue, though… I’ve had this PC for a year (I got it second hand) and this only started happening with the new patch.

this website might help

hard to post sites here
[How to fix Kernel-Power error 41 in Windows 11 and Windows 10](htt ps://en.windowsnoticias.com/How-to-fix-kernel-power-error-41-in-windows-11-and-windows-10/)

I’ll look into that. Otherwise, do you think I could try plugging it into a different outlet? I have it plugged into a surge protector currently. Maybe that’s the problem? Idk lol.

some of the cheaper el crappo PSUs are made with crappy components that fail and leak like capacitors (don’t open the psu might get nasty shock from the caps) if you have a friend that has one laying around to test of take it to a computer shop to test the psu. i had the same thing happen my 500w psu replaced it with a spare 550w one and fixed it. but i didn’t know about the event 41 kernal power error code

Buy a can (or two) of compressed air, unscrew the wall of your pc base, clean out any dust inside, especially around the gpu and cpu, re-attach wall, reboot, and see if it resolves.

I agree with the previous reply that your PSU probably can’t keep up.

Blizzard doesn’t offer official support for shutdown issues because they are not a function of the game client and result from a command issued by your operating system.

You could try the steps in that article, or run some stress tests to see if they cause the same behavior.

Error 41 is just the computer not shutting down properly. 124 is a bus error. Which could be heat or a faulty PS. Would start with blowing out the fans, video card and power supply. Also check if your computer has a filter or screen on the ps input and clean it

It was already stress tested. Not by me, but by a computer repair shop. They had said that it ran well and couldn’t reproduce the crash, so I’m wondering if that means there’s something wrong on my end like it’s not drawing enough electricity from the surge protector?

You can figure that out. Just move your setup to another outlet. Or try another power strip.

Sadly, my outlet options are fairly limited but I guess I’ll do some experimenting… thank you.

I would try first without the surgery suppressor. Some suppressors depending on where you are in the world have voltage regulators.

So it turns out my power supply has a sticker that indicates it should be 750W…… does this change anything?

Make and model of the Power supply and the date of manufacture

Corsair RM850X EDIT it’s actually the 2018 or 2019 version lol

By default, when Windows BSOD’s, it just reboots the PC. You have to actually change settings to make it stay on the BSOD.

Start+R->sysdm.cpl followed by the enter key->advanced->startup and recovery->settings->uncheck automatically restart->okay. Now the system won’t automatically reboot if you BSOD.

(sysdm.cpl just saves you the trouble of having to peck through menus to get to the advanced system settings window)

This is likely just some driver crash or something triggering a BSOD, but you can’t completely rule out power supply issues. The errors in your DXDIAG report have bluescreens in them.

My IT guy said that the BSODs he could see were basically useless. He strongly recommended I try a new power supply box since mine was relatively old….

FWIW, I tried a different outlet on my surge protector last night and didn’t have any crashes. But I also only played for 3 hours instead of 6 like I did Sunday night.

I would continue trying the alternative outlet before investing in a new power supply. If there is something wrong with your outlet, you’d want get it checked by an electrician for safety reasons.

You want to test by plugging it straight into the wall outlet bypassing the surge suppressor. A bad surge suppressor can cause it to turn off
