A big part of WoW’s early success was being able to level all the way to cap solo.
Every other competing MMORPG required grouping.
However, leveling isn’t going to keep people entertained for 20 years.

Raiding, M+, and dungeons are doable what, one, two nights a week? What other group content is there to do for the rest of the week? Where is the group adventuring? Where is the player profession interaction? World pvp? Where are all the things that made the world feel alive?
You can do keys or arena any night of the week.
Am I being memed?
Forget it. You just don’t get it.
WoW was a great MMO and RPG. Two decades ago. It’s still a good game though, despite what hacktivision did to it.
In think it’s because they focused on high end content, and attracted players who focus on that. Even casual players are very goal oriented most of the time.
Whereas games like FFXIV heavily focus on the story and role-playing, and hard content is niche. Although it’s arguably not a great MMO, because you can play though it by yourself.
I think vanilla was a great balance of both MMO and RPG. Where Warcraft universe setting was still comprehensible while players had freedom to do whatever they wanted together, not formulated into end game yet
If nothing else, this thread has shown why it’s impossible to design the perfect game for everyone.
We got one guy in here disappointed that the game isn’t dark souls… Personally, I’d love difficulty settings out in the world, but if the game was incredibly challenging for everyone it’d probably be dead in no time.
Personally, I just like a good story to interact with and WoW does that for me. I’d love to see a living world in my MMORPG, but they chose to focus on instanced content loops instead. I loved the feeling of leveling on Classic before TBC dropped, it was a solid game for me.
I miss feeling progression in the world and seeing it full of other players. I miss server communities and not feeling like I have nothing worthwhile to do to progress my character. Admittedly this never really existed in end game, it was always the leveling experience for me, save the artifact system in Legion which was awesome.
Legion was magical with the class stories and the artifact system. The only downside were the really horrendous gates, but once those were nerfed and we got into the last year of the expac, nothing could compare to it for me.
But I know a lot of people have different expansions that they enjoy for different reasons. I’ve accepted that WoW is not my main focus anymore, it’s the last game I play when there’s not new story content. The only way they could change that is by probably upsetting the people who already commit to the game as it is.
Luckily I have better games to play for these experiences.
2008 called and wants its argument back.
ha the major troll garmuck showed up. flagged and moved on
I don’t think they meant the artifact quests in Legion.
There used to be actual class quests that gave you gear for your class, and for the Paladin Charger and Warlock Dreadsteed mounts. They’ve removed it though.
I love class specific content and wish we had more. Exiles Reach has 1 class unique quest chain for a spell which is kind of cool.
Say hi to classic redo.
Me being social is maybe 10 seconds of group, maybe a thanks…and one of us dropping party. I am older and slower…so I am dumped more lol.
that is if…you even see someone.
NGL…I’d have even the basic same faction tagging the game used to have. The all faction was nice. even same side was decent however.
Its less button clicks to get in then leave the group I don’t really care about. nor do the other people. Hogger has died many times for us. Its not the bonding experience it may have been 17 years ago.
Now some go where is the social. Discord. its in discord. for many classic servers its actually way better than ingame.
and is now a must for pvp arena. TO get x-realm we must find a discord buddy since discord pvp channels are all servers.
Friend them in game. and now arena can be “x-realmed” joined for slower servers.

I hope you aren’t referring to me. Because Dark Souls is the last thing I want out of the game.
