That’s not a very nice thing to say, and I’m not sure how. The game was always solo friendly and that’s part of why it has been so successful. Imagine if you couldn’t level without a party.
WoW is an online RPG. It might be massive overall, but it never feels massive. Most of the repeat loop of the game is designed around 1 player, 5 players, or the occasional 10-30.
I suppose raids could be considered massive when filled.
But I agree that the RPG aspect is pretty much dead and that started around the time they scaled and streamlined the leveling process.
Well, WoW is catering more and more toward solo players especially with this expansion.
Aghhhh… dinoes aghh…
Garmuck, your threads bounce around a lot.
Just to chime in, MMO/Rpg both are just not that good. The game is in today’s standards pretty sub par in my opinion.
I meant for kill X mob quests (which is a large number of them).
Also many single NPC kill quests shared the drop (like loot someone’s head and such).
Other collect quests like collect 8 drops didn’t share even in group.
But if you are in an area to kill quest mobs and someone else is there, you either group to both get kill credit or you fight each other for tags.
In my old age, i often prefer solo gameplay (minus M+ obviously) as my tolerance for people has grown slim over the years. Life has reduced me to a bitter old hag. /stay off my lawn
I just enjoy the option. If I had to get a 3-5 man together just to level an alt I’d have spent a lot less time on alts.
Tigers! Oh my!
Just because they throw a bone in that direction doesn’t mean they’re catering to that style of gameplay. They’ve always added “stuff to do” for solo players, but they’re still too afraid to let it encroach on being interesting enough to make group instance players feel like they have to leave their instances or lobby UI.
This is because they wanted to keep everything as part of WoW, and then stupidly felt like people should do all of it. That’s like telling someone they need to shop in every department of the department store and they’ll save more money. I don’t need pet supplies, I don’t have a pet!
If WoW kept the RPG element and let Raiding, M+, PVP, and Pet Battles be separate game modes we’d all be better off.
What is your definition of an “RPG Element”?
Questing was hard
Grouping and guilds was necessary
Attuning to raids
The Gates of Ahn’Qiraj
Alterac Valley going for 6 hours
Your class quests
Going all over creation on expensive mounts to get stuff
Queueable BGs was how you went for Rank 14
Things were big, and you weren’t Chief Allied Commander of NATO forces
Honestly… When you get that many people together you spend a lot of time just waiting for someone to log on so that you can get back to leveling together (because you know dang well someone would get upset if you leveled without them.) One person, fine. A group? Nty, I have a tendency to grind levels in a short period of time. Then again, patience has never been a strong suit of mine.
Been saying this for years. It has lost its RPG aspect for sure.
Questing was hard - never a thing in WoW so ok
Grouping and guilds were necessary - WoW became the juggernaught it is BECAUSE it allowed solo gameplay to level. End game is still grouping. Guilds for the very top end content.
Attuning to raids - why? Was AQ40 and ZG then Blizzard already putting non-RPG elements into the game? Was Wrath not an RPG then?
The Gates of Ahn’Qiraj - 1 server wide event most people barely participated in is what makes an RPG? Something never repeated in TBC onward?
Alterec Valley going for 6 hours - are you sure 6 hours is the required length to be an RPG? Why not 2 or 8 hours?
Your class quests - So Legion was by far more RPG than vanilla in this regard and every other expansion not an RPG?
Going all over creation on expensive mounts to get stuff - so like, farming mats? Specially on an epic mount? Wut?
Queueable BGs was how you went for Rank 14 - the most unhealthy system every created, one in which also was done through premades at higher ranks?? You may be the first person I’ve ever seen defend the HWL system.
How many level 60s do you have in hardcore mode?
Did you feel smart for writing this?
What part is confusing you?
I hated that system, but it didn’t require group making out of some weird sense of “it’s an MMO…talk to each other!”
Lol jumping to hardcore characters now???
A thing that doesn’t officially exist yet, and only was developed by an addon to add some challenge to a pretty easy leveling system.
WoW being easy and solo able was part of its appeal man.
I’m also curious how long a battleground needs to last to be an RPG. That is a pretty wild take.
But they didn’t change the difficulty of the quests. They’re just as hard now as they were then.
The converse is that these are 15 min microgames. Which is not RPG.
I know… That’s why it is the way it is now.
