… it’s a 21 year old game with over 10 expansions worth of content.
Like, This is basically playing 6 normal 100gb games.
The fact that it’s compressed to ONLY 124gb is a damn miracle and shows that current games do not do it at all.

Without mods or patches
Morrowind was 1.4GB.
Oblivion was 4.6GB.
Skyrim was 12GB.
Oblivion Remastered was 120GB.
Elder Scrolls 6 will probably require a liquid-state drive.
But yeah, as WoW adds more content it uses more space. If WoW used 4k textures the game would likely create a singularity.

Game companies don’t optimize anything anymore, so now the consumers are expected to buy bigger storage and everything else to make up for it
Just look at how much hell divers 2 shrunk when they optimized storage

Well, it is a game that has been going on for 21 years with constant, consistent updates.
I think at least a few companies are working on new AI driven compression technology so maybe in the next ??? years they’ll reduce the size of games by a large amount. Some things say by 70%. 
My current PC is the first computer I’ve ever gotten that has less storage space than my previous computer.
I was so used to not having to worry about hard drive space that it’s been a shock to the system to have do an uninstall pass to clean up space.

That’s 180GB for 2 modern games in a series, while WoW packed 10 expansions into just 124 GB.

FFXIV is around 120gb… MMO’s that have been around a long time have a largish footprint. But I can’t imagine any new pc today that has less than 4tb of free space so it’s not that big a deal.

Well nvme prices have been skyrocketing, you’re right about that. But you can still get a high end 2tb stick for under $250. And a 20tb spinner is around $300.
It’s pretty sad though… I picked up a 2tb Samsung 990 for $119 in August. Wouldn’t be surprised to see prices start jumping on the spinning discs of rust now.
It kinda sucks yeah but honestly with how much content was added it could be a whole lot worse
