A lot of it also has to do with racial passives, of which no other game has.
For instance, most people who want to do serious PvP go human cause it’s a free trinket, rogue mains tend to go Night elf cause it’s a free, in-combat stealth…etc.

Who is to say that blizzard did not listen to their playerbase?
Many Blood Elf players are scared enough as it is to lose what makes their race unique.
It’s because Blizz makes armor specifically for the Human/Elf body type. Put half of the armor sets on Darkspear trolls and you’ll see why so few people play them.
And the starting zone for them is truly awful.
I 100% agree and I play ffxiv and unsubbed from WoW.
I HATE that every race has to be pretty or cute. I want my ugly trolls I live for trolls.
It truly sucks thst WoW has such cool races, I envy those who play as humans or elf’s cause you can play on any mmo with ease.
They need to add bangaa to ffxiv or some ugly fish dude
Au Ra are already ugly.
I don’t think so. Other than the dermatitis, they look like all the others.
They are ugly. Very much so.
Miqo’te look weird.
Humans look… normal.
Elezen are giraffes.
Also, I do not care overall about complaints in regards to a lack of racial diversity.
90% if not more of the WoW player base play either a form of elf or human.
Any critique of a lack of racial diversity falls flat on it’s face.
The one thing one can criticize about FFXIV, objectively atleast, is it’s combat. I’ll never get used to FFXIVs combat, I’ll never start liking it.
Everything else, FFXIV does a lot better… objectively.
You’re right and you should say it. WoW allows me to be a gremlin shorty in like 6 flavors.
Green Gremlin
Creepy Childlike Gremlin
Mechanical Creepy Childlike Gremlin
Furry Gremlin
Hairy Stout Gremlin
Hairy Stout Flaming Gremlin
FF is just a anima fetish.
I’ll preface this post by saying this is all in my own personal opinion.
I very much agree that the FFXIV playable races are really bland. It’s something I’ve grumbled about many times and is the main reason I haven’t bothered to try the game out.
The race selection to me is very banal with little variety. Something like Hrothgar are a breath of fresh air, but the game needs to have more races like it. It seems like rather than add anything interesting, they’re more inclined to add in humans with animal parts stapled to them or things like bunny girls. The latter of which the devs dressed up as to excitedly announce…which given that and how the character creation engine seems, gives me little hope of seeing anything I would find interesting. Yes, I know Viera have a history with Final Fantasy since the Tactics Advance series, but I feel like their popularity isn’t so much their race’s lore as opposed to just being bunny girls.
The thing about variety in a MMORPG is that I feel it’s important to have a good variety. Sure, people will gravitate towards humans and elves, but not everyone does. You appeal to those people who would rather play a monster race or something like a lizardman race by adding them. It’s part of world-building and it strengthens your brand by offering interesting races. It’s especially adding to the game when you meet someone that is really into their character.
Some like to be the graceful Elf, some like to be the Dwarf that loves his ale and a good fight, and some like to be the angry Ogre that bashes things. This is why you don’t want to just have humans and elves as your playable races, in my opinion, and the more variety you have, the more people you’ll attract to your game.
And when you compare FFXIV to other games, the races really just seem really disappointing. Everquest 2 has a wide variety of races, all complete with their own lore personality. Guild Wars 2, with its limited race selection, has more variety in all of their races. Even Elder Scrolls Online, with all its human races, has some variety with a few of their races. It’s something that really adds to the game to be able to create as a character and read up on the lore, getting you connected to that game’s world. Something I feel is very important for any MMORPG.
With WoW, there is a pretty decent variety of races, but there are several more races that could become playable that would make the character selection screen even better. Ogres for your brutish races, Saurok and Sethrak for reptilian races, San’layn as a vampiric race, Kelfin and jinyu/Ankoan for aquatic races, Arakkoa as an avian race, Saberon as a full feline race, and more. All of which comes with lore, storylines, and personality. That future seems much brighter to me than…an anime waifu race with -insert animal here- parts.
I know that FFXIV is a good game and I hope it does well since competition is good in the MMORPG market, but I can’t get into it at all if it wants me to focus on one character and none of the playable races appeal to me at all. If they ever make Bangaa (a shame they didn’t come with Viera since they come from the same series) playable, I’ll very much consider playing it, but as I said, I have little faith they would add in interesting races.
Again, all of what I typed is my own personal opinion. I view character creation as the most important part of a MMORPG, and I like seeing variety in games as opposed to just variant human races.
That is very unlikely. They said before Shadowbringers launched that Vierra and Hrothgar were more than likely the last time they’d be adding new races to the game.
WoW is just a furry fetish.
If that’s the case then I really hope the female Hrothgars are good looking in a feral/beastly sort of way.
@ Bagzak, +1 as I ran out. I agree.
As someone who usually only plays humans I agree OP more evil monster races like orcs and trolls for me to slay the better.
They want to keep it in the spirit of Final Fantasy though and FF traditionally just doesn’t have as much racial diversity as WoW does. At least not for the protagonists.
I guess they could add that bangaa race from FF12. Or stuff like that.
There are those.
Rather be a human then a hutch back green skin ugly monster.
Will again preface this post that this is all in my own personal opinion.
if this is true, it is very disappointing to hear.
I had hoped when they did add Viera and Hrothgar, that they might have been open to adding in races from the various single player FF games (Hrothgar are based on the Ronso from FFX) that would be in the spirit of FF in general. This coupled with several official polls that SE did, asking players the type of new races people would like to see in the future, at least gave me the impression that new races would likely be gradually added in future expansions.
If they’re just going to abandon new races altogether, it seals the deal that I’ll never play that game. It’s frustrating for many reasons I’ve grumbled about and more.
Under the assumption that a MMORPG is successful, new races are a feature that I feel should gradually get added. It makes for a great announcement, can appeal to people who have interest in races that become playable, and makes the game seem fresh. It’s an investment to the game that lasts until the game eventually shuts down. To see FFXIV abandon new races entirely, especially after seeing the races they did add and after a surge of success, just seems baffling and short sighted to me.
It’s also frustrating when I’ve mentioned to players of FFXIV in discussion about wanting to see Bangaa playable, that they just jump down my throat about it. Statements as as “the game doesn’t need any more races!” or “I’d rather they use the resources on something else.” becomes annoying coming from people already comfortably playing the game while the playable race selection is the big reason stopping me from playing the game.
This isn’t all FFXIV players that say this, of course. One of the reasons I’ve been gung-ho about playable Bangaa, aside from me liking lizardmen races in general and that they’re a NPC race in the game, is that they seemed like they had a chance with some fan backing. I saw some support for both of those with regards to Ivalice races (mostly Viera support, of course) to the point where SE did an April Fools joke of a new race of a Bangaa/Viera hybrid.
I could go on, but I’ll likely end up grumbling a lot more on it. It remains to be seen whether they will add in new races or not, and even then it depends on the type of races they add in, but as I said, my faith in that regard is in free fall mode for that game. Again, I hear it’s a good game and I hope it does well as a competitor, but the playable race selection is utterly lacking, in my opinion.
Now, on the bright side, it does get me to appreciate WoW and its race selection. Not to mention that it’s better at supporting players like me who like alts (not perfect mind you, but better) along with the possibility of new races of different types in the future. A few more races in particular becoming playable, and I’d be very content with the game in that aspect. WoW is very close to having a really good variety of races that appeal to several types of players, and hopefully we’ll see more added that people have been requesting for a long time.
To each their own. If you enjoy FFXIV, then I’m happy for you and hope you have a great time. It’s just not my cup of tea at present.
They said it during the fanfests leading up to Shadowbringers. At the same time they said they’d add more if they could find a way to streamline the process. So if there is a race you want from one of the FF games that you want, try to get some support going for it. We do know Yoshi P is keen to give players what they want if there is support for it.
ur 100% correct
ff does have better systems tho, like badge vendor
