I’ve been playing with WoW on an 80 GB SSD for quite a few years. WoW is the only thing on that drive. Today it’s complete full. It looks like new patch data is downloading in the background. Is this going to cause problems when the new patch comes out on Tuesday? Will I need to move WoW to a bigger hard drive just to keep playing? And is this going to be a new normal?
Karenthi,
The size of that harddrive is dangerously close to WoW’s fully installed volume. We do everything we can to optimize the size of the game, but with each patch we do add more and more information to the game client. If we continue patching the game, eventually it will pass that 80GB mark - if not this patch. You may want to consider upgrading to a larger harddrive.
To reduce the size on the drive, you can completely reinstall the game - sometimes old data is not purged when we update (though we’ve gotten better at reclaiming data we’re no longer using, we don’t always get everything.) You’d also want to reset your ui to get rid of any extra data left behind by your addons which can also take up space. Uninstalling the game does not fully clear these folders. This may buy you a bit more time before needing to upgrade, but just keep in mind that we don’t delete old game data when we add content. The game’s only going to keep getting bigger as long as we continue patching.
80GB is a bit small…if only WoW is on it and not windows you can format it and reinstall WoW. or you can always get a SATA SSD or a USB3 drive i run WoW off a 2TB usb drive because this laptop only has 32gb drive in it
Thanks for the replies. I checked on Amazon and I was surprised how cheap SSD’s have become. I guess I’ll be ordering a new one soon.
