WOW+ Dungeons and Dragons

OK, i’ve been looking into D&D lately, and just recently purchased the Monster Manual. I’m surprised really by all the things WOW took from D&D for Azeroth. Consider.
Ettin and Ogre mages both borrow parts of the D&D Ettin.
Faerie Dragons are the same in both.
Arakoa (Highborn) are basically Aarakocra.
Dark Iron Dwarves are combinations of Azer and Duergar.
Night Elves and Nightborne both had aspects of the Drow (You might remember the powerful spider we put out of it’s misery early in Nelf questing.)
The Demonolog Warlock Artifact in Legion is basically a DemiLich, or FlameSkull.
Gnolls are the same
Trogs have a lot in common with Grimlock’s.
Undead Drakes are basically Dracolich.
The K’thir from Stormsong Valley are Mindflayers.
Our Orcs and their modern orcs are quite similar, and I should point out that the early D&D orc were pigmen, and that definitely puts ours relationship with the Quilboar into perspective.

I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but i just find it interesting.

I’m also surprised how much Dungeons and Dragons was inspired by Lord of the Rings.

Yes. Stooped. As you can see I still do.

I am also surprised how a high school drop out convinced me to pretend to be an elfen archer named Sparrow Tooth the Nuggin Huger

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Glad you are getting into d&d. With the right people, that game makes memories that will still be with you decades later. It is just such a fun experience.

I love video games, but sitting around a table with friends is still tons better than anything on a screen.

I also like that i feel many elements of Dragonlance in WoW

I just don’t see how everyone is surprised by this, D&D was there original . Everything else follows suit. I do believe there is even an easter egg some where in game I think .

You mean those Boralus soldiers playing D&D that we heard about? I still haven’t been able to find those guys.

Considering Blizz also barrowed from Greek and Norse Mythology.
And then there’s all the old gods who seem to be lifted from L. Ron Hubbard’s works.
The only thing I can think Blizz may have brought to the fantasy genre was their take on Orcs not being a twisted form of another race, or completely evil.

It’s one of the quotes from Delvar Ironfist when you click on him

Yes it’s true many LOTR stuff came from Norse type mythology. Also… both the authors of LOTR and The Lion Witch Wardrobe books were friends and brainstormed ideas together

WoW elves tend to be more than the perfect fantasy types, because all WoW elves are flawed in some way.
