WoW crashing with access violation at address 0x228

I too am getting this constant error since the patch on 30 Jul 2024.

What is that we do from here?

I’ve done clearing my cache to turning off all addons to turning off turbo settings in my bios. (Suggested from elsewhere).

Edit: I see the post a few above with the “fix”

Just started getting this in the last hour. crashing every 3 minutes or so…

Turn off the new graphics options. That fixes it

Also fixed this for me!
Access violation error started happening to me randomly, but only for characters in Remix. I have an Intel CPU, i7 11th Gen, and a 3060ti.

Which new graphic option? The shadow one?

I’m having the same problem, it’s unplayble right now…
Turning off some addon seens to help for not crashing so early, like the “Dialogue” ADDon, but even turning all ADDons off does not help.

This is already posted above but I see responses that didn’t read the thread, so adding it here.

Marking the link to the EU forum thread as a ‘Solution’ since it seems to mitigate the problem for people. Hopefully we get a real bug fix soon ™.

Ty for it Elocin, it seens to help ALOT in here.

Ironically, the initial fix of turning those two graphics settings off fixed it… upon further research, I believe the problem has to do with the “Render Scale” option within the game.

I had the Render Scale at 91%… after bumping it back up to 100%, NOT ONLY was the game like 40 FPS faster (not lying) but I was able to re-enable those two things I turned off (Advanced Work Submit & Optional GPU Features). Looks better than ever.

Curious if others have a similar experience…

Also getting crashes, also not getting crashes after setting render scale to exactly 100%.

Crashes are related to the UI rendering a 3d model (unit frames, talking head, transmog, etc) while render scale is not at 100% as far as I can tell.

None of the suggestion are working for me,
Did the render scale thing i was already 100% so i went to 90 restart went to 100 restart.
Turned off all the new graphics options ( took longer but still crashed ).
Fiddled with addons ,did system check/repairs up the wahoo no change.

This is most definitely on blizz side , least i hope to god so because i dont want to have to go through the hoops and stress of it being a bad cpu (i9 13900kf) i just had it all check out by a techshop and everything came back fine.

Summary

I’m having this issue, too. Has anyone tried disabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling? Looking at the render scale first, then HAGS, then if that still crashes then disabling Resizable BAR in my BIOS.

HAGS especially was one of those newer GPU features that could cause games to get cranky.

Nevermind. Setting render scale to 100 fixed it.

As I can’t reply on the EU forums, this’ll have to do.

4070 ti here. I’m also getting these crash issues and just now set my render scale from its default 90% to 100%. I’ll update if this seems to work.

Edit: 5 hours of play and no issues upon making that 100% change.

Was having the same issues starting morning of 08/03, almost constantly every 1-2min. As Ignitheus did I changed my render scale from 150% down to 100%. So far so good after 10mins.

First, I found a way of reliably reproducing this issue to me, and it was to open my renown screen and going to the Dream Wardens, where the game was waiting to execute that animation that moves the icon from one level to the next. That did it 100% for me.

Then I tried the render scaling option as linked above by Elocin, and at least on the case I mentioned above, it stopped crashing, 100%.

But as I had this crash on other seemingly random situations, I’m not totally sure it is a definitive workaround while things get fixed.

I consistently had this crash on my character in the emerald dream when ever I logged in. Changing my render scale to 100% as said above allowed me to at least log in and walk around so far so that seems to work.

ive got a friend who has tried all options from this post and also one linked , it still is having issues even with every work around i can think of , it was working perfectly fine yesterday and as of todays 300mb patch it broke something no idea why , even a gm has contacted him with 0 clues on why

It’s worrying even a GM doesn’t know what’s going on? As this is still happening to me too. I’m in the process of reinstalling the game as someone also suggested that too and that has seemed to work for them and so far zero issues.

It is now day 3 for me with this issue. I am not able to play the game at all. All I wanted to do was work on my warbank and do the prepatch.

Here’s a couple of things that helped me:
Made sure render scale was set to 100%
In Shadowed Unit Frames addon, changed 3D portraits to 2D portraits on all units.
Doing this I went from crashing within a minute of logging in down to 1-2 crashes per day.
