Launch discord (or optionally have it already running) and click “Share your screen” then choose the WoW window, accepting the default settings. (Optionally, do none of this and enable the overlay instead.)
Expected result: WoW is streamed. (Or if doing the overlay thing, you can see an overlay when you talk.)
Actual result: Two modal popups. The one below and then one asking what happened, with an option to send to Blizzard and to reopen or close.
Wow
This application has encountered a critical error:
The instruction at “0x00007ff926fba9b1” referenced memory at “0x0000000000000000”.
The memory could not be “read”.
Press OK to terminate the application.
OK
But here’s the thing: WoW is in fact still running perfectly well in the background. It’s even streaming. I can play and play and play as long as I don’t click Close. If I move the two modal dialog boxes off to another monitor, I’m good.
System info: Nvidia driver 27.21.14.5206 dated 8/12/2020. Windows 10 “Version 2004 (OS Build 20185.1000)” and the “August 10” build of Discord, I guess. Hardware wise it’s an i9-9900k and 2080ti (stop laughing it’s from 2018, I’m fine with it).
I’ve updated nvidia drivers at least once - this has been a problem for a couple of months. I strongly suspect it has to do with the build of Windows that I’m on but I can’t prove that and also, if it is they’ll treat a bug report from Blizzard much better than one from me.
Hey, Contrarius! The crashes are definitely caused by the Discord Overlay. We can only recommend to disable the Discord overlay, under Settings > Overlay and toggling off. I don’t think this should prevent streaming, just prevent the crashes.
Our team has already looked into this and there doesn’t seem to be a way for us to prevent it. If disabling the overlay seems to not work in this situation, we can only recommend to report this over to Discord to have them take a look at what’s causing the crashes and how to prevent it further.
Thanks so much! I had wondered, since my friends are able to use streaming on discord without problem, whether or not it was my build of Windows. I will send feedback to Discord.
Update: Discord has been working with me a ton, having me try this and that and the other thing. No luck so far. I guess if nobody else is hitting this then it’s not a big deal, but it would be nice if it worked, too. If I run their “canary” (alpha) build, I can stream, just not use overlays. I have something like 47 instances of crash files and .dmps under wow_retail_\errors and counting. Weird that it doesn’t actually crash wow though.
You arent alone. 2 things just happened for me and now i can no longer stream on discord. just changed all my addons, and windows updated itself. even with addons disabled it crashes.
i too believe its a bloody windows issue
