There’s a video of it. The screen goes black & my computer whirls loudly. I’ve uninstalled & reinstalled with no luck. What’s going on? What did Blizzard do to screw up this badly?
Hey Lotous,
Sorry to hear about the black screen issue when you’re playing WoW. Usually when the display turns off and the fans spin up like this it means there was a problem with the video card.
If you’d like to post the DxDiag from your system we can take a look at that and provide some suggestions on what to try.
DXDIAG
- Press Windows Key + R.
- In the Run window type dxdiag and press Enter.
- In the DirectX window, click Save All Information.
- Name the file “dxdiag” and save it to your Desktop. Open the new dxdiag file with Notepad.
- In the posting section hit the </> button for “Preformatted text” then paste (Ctrl+V) the DXDIAG contents. That’ll make the information much more readable.
If you are unable to post this due to the length of the DXDIAG, please feel free to use pastebin.com and share the direct link with us instead. Use the </> button as well in order to share the link.
For some reason, when I open it with Notepad, it doesn’t work. So instead, here’s a screen shot I saved onto Imgur. Please turn on images for Technical Help, it’ll be 100% easier to screen shot than link. Until then REMOVE the spaces to see the screenshot.

That’s just a picture of your dxdiag program not the actual dxdiag information. A dxdiag contains many pages of information and wouldn’t be able to be captured in a screenshot it would take dozens of them.
Why doesn’t opening it in notepad work? Are you successfully making the text file on step 4 of the blue instructions? Do you have word or wordpad or any other text software that might be able to open it?
It asks to save as .xml or .txt does it matter?
I would use .txt
Still won’t open. I right-click then Open With… Notepad & NOTHING comes up.
That’s quite concerning. I recommend running a repair on Windows, as this is a basic application that doesn’t require any fancy permissions, and should be working.
I noticed that not only is your screen black but your monitor also has turned off. It’s been my experience over the years that monitors turning off are often the cause of a possible faulty power supply.
I would try fitting a working spare psu to see. The noise you hear are the cooling fans spinning up usually when your box gets too hot.
