I really think WoW could be on the level of Dark Souls and Berserk with better writing. The world is there, setting is there, lore is there and a lot of terrible shiznit has happened.
but the writing is bobbys world and eurekas castle level of pg. (im old I know none of you know those shows)
we need better writers. Dark Fantasy is where Warcraft started and its slowly moved away from it, but not even to cater to a bigger audience.
Unfortunately, if writers cannot tolerate a single cuss, then I highly doubt theyâre going to stray beyond their usual, âperfectly fineâ levels of genocide.
I would love to see this though.
Probably. And then theyâre going to make him into âHe was good all along!â even though he unleashed Yâshaarj and committed a few war crimes against the Pandarens, and also his own people.
Same thing theyâre gonna pull for Sylvanas, Iâm guessing. You canât have a bad guy being a bad guy for bad guy reasons anymore. It must be bad acts veiled with totally good intent.
I donât recall WoW ever being a dark fantasy series, even the RTS games were fairly humoress in nature. Darker elements have always been present, though WoW is a product that has never taken itself very seriously.
I would say that Diablo is Blizzards âdark fantasyâ IP.
This is a funny topic because I could never picture WoW being that dark. Yet that is hypocritical to say as I have been spending most of the week just typing several small things about twisted content. I was just scratching the surface.
Even in BFAâŚI was mentioning cannibalism in Nazmir. I mean Drustvar seemed to be everyoneâs favorite zone and it was morbid too. Stormsong Valley had cultisits and ritualsâŚstill back to cannibalism I always felt like Nazmir was the most grotesque as I am just not a big fan of cannibalism due to our history in human civilization. (Russian faminie is usually the first one to come to mind. Even tho there was others. With them eating their own childrenâŚ) So it feels like another layer of darkness compared to Drustvar or StormsongâŚ
Still as dark as people are mentioning? I think they try and keep a balance (subtle) to appeal to a broader audience. I thought maybe near the final expansion if they wanted to get a bit more into the H.P. Lovecraft inspired material it would obviously get darker. We really donât know what they have planned. They might go another direction with the game.
Why do some people what WoW to be like other games. If I wanted to play dark souls I would play it. They game everyone wants WoW to turn into is already out there for you to play it, go there and play what you want and leave Warcraft alone.
Thatâs one of the problems WoW has, itâs trying to be to much like other games and moved away from what made WoW great and brought millions into the world.
You can see some shades of dark fantasy in older Warcraft concept art and actually in vanilla WoW, but yeah WCIII and xpacs after Vanilla took more of that lighthearted/humorous approach.
It makes me wonder what WoW would look like today if there hadnât been an effort to tonally course-correct WoW after Vanilla.
Iâd probably quit if WoW tried to go darker. I play WoW because I enjoy the mostly lighthearted setting with darker elements occasionally added. Itâs for this reason why I also generally dislike Diablo despite liking the genera of game it is.
to be fair though, Garrosh really got a bad deal. he was such a great character and they ruined him. I mean they acknowledge in game how awesome he should of been and it annoys me.
This makes me laugh. WoW was at an all time high in popularity during WOTLK which was the darkest the game ever was except arguably vanilla.
They stole one of the most well known and powerful characters in DnD, Lord Soth, and made him a warcraft character with the Lich King. (obviously existed in WC3)
This Dark character that wiped out legions of people and brought the undead made wow the most popular it ever was and is still referenced today. Once Mists came people ran away not because it sucked, its my favorite expansion, but because people saw pandas and bright colors and could not get their fix of dark fantasy.
so no, we are not changing what warcraft is. we want warcraft back
Iâd say itâs more Joss Whedon or Sam Raimi levels of writing so rather than comparing it to something from Nick Jr or Fox Kids,Iâd say Hercules/Xena or Firely levels [Still salty Firefly was so short lived]. Thereâs an even mix of dark and camp to balance things out and itâs that nice mix that makes the franchise great. WoW wouldnât be WoW anymore if they stuck only with super gritty, edgelord levels of writing especially when games like those have been a dime a dozen for over a decade.
Sometimes you have to cut the grim dark content with some comedic elements or light hearted charm which has often been something Blizzard has done for years with WoW and Overwatch where we can get the pure edgy fix from StarCraft and Diablo [if you ignore the easter eggs in Diablo anyway] Honestly,if they tried to cater to the edgelords only, theyâd lose alot of the playerbase as 1. Many families do and have ALWAYS played together and theyâd be alienating that demographic and 2. Would be more homogenized than people already perceive the game to be as people actually LIKE the light and fun moments of the game [poop quests and easter egg quests since day 1 anyone? Personally loved the katamari quest in CATA]
Pet battles are a fun break when doing one of the darker quest lines as are other elements and I canât really imagine them ditching that to appeal to the perceived ideal of whatâs truly adult to some.
TLDR- WoW is fine as is and doesnât need to go edgelord levels of dark to be good or be offensive for the sake of being offensive to be good.
Vanilla WoW is pretty grimdark. The Alliance and Horde are pushed back to the brink by all of these monstrous cultures that rape, eat, or skin alive their captives. Dragons have infiltrated the Stormwind nobility, spreading political turmoil. The Dwarven politics are pretty intense too. Forsaken and live human experimentation go together like peanut butter and jelly, too.
Absolutely, WoW has always had elements of grimdark fantasy, without ever relying on it as a genre. I can think of grimdark moments across every expansion, alongside the various pop culture references and numerous poop quests.
What I love most about WoW is that it doesnât take itself too seriously, and allows for a blending of genres to create a more robust and immersive world. My only real complaint would be that I wished Blizzard did care more about world continuity and stable lore, instead of throwing it aside for the âRule of cool!â whenever they please.
My apologies that I couldnât give your post a heart, Iâm all out for the next five hours. Please accept this instead.
Or you know, it was riding on the high of the Warcraft 3, people wanted to see how Arthasâ story ended. Also, said time happened to be a point when we had less things that could divert our attention/less online leisure activities. Nowadays everyone has a smartphone and in some ways they are better than a PC.
Also, while WoW has grimdark elements it was never all grimdark! Even vanilla WoW had a few fluff quest, fun quests and just goofy quests.
no I agree with you and theres no reason to disagree.
people DROPPED their subs when mist came out.
mists story is FAR better than WOTLK without a doubt but people didnt give it a chance based on visuals alone
My apologies for misunderstanding! Iâm glad you informed me so I could rectify my error. I am out of hearts to give, so please accept this in the meantime.
