WoW constantly updating and not launching

They* removed the Read Only flag on the folders and then did a Scan & Repair in Bnet.

Thank you for this. The issue popped back up for me after my initial reply to this thread, so I was about to tear my hair out until I read this.
I didn’t bother checking every single file manually but just rightclicked the WoW folder and unchecked the Read Only box, then scan & repaired my game.
WoW booted immediately afterwards.

Also want to confirm that this solution worked for me! Right clicked on the WoW folder and unchecked read only. That plus scanning the battle net files seems to have done the trick. Thank you everyone for the input and help.

I’d been having a similar issue and this seems to be the same thing my computer did too, seeing as how there are alot of folders in WoW now set to read-only, however, do I have to manually untick read-only to EVERY file here? I’m seeing an option each time asking if I wanna untick it for all folders within it as well and that doesn’t seem to actually do anything. In short…does EVERYTHING need to have read-only unchecked?

Update: So unchecking the WoW folder and retail’s read-only did seem to finally make WoW at least update, unless this was just the fix to the files. Making it run however didn’t seem to work.

sadly this doesn’t seem to be fixing my issue. I can’t even uncheck the read only box, the folder just remains on read-only despite claiming it’s going to uncheck read-only.

Can you do the annoying and extreme thing and uncheck every single item within the WoW folder from Read Only? It’d take a lot of time which is why I tried from the main folder instead of individually unchecking the box.

Or is your PC set up so you aren’t the admin account?

@Trezorene and everyone else that has this problem … you cannot untick the folder (even with admin account) because windows will re-tick it. the read only flag needs removed from all files within the folders. blame microshaft for making everything read only with the windows updates. never had this problem with windows 7

so does that mean just WoW’s unplayable now thanks to microsoft?

After I checked, it seems like only the folders are showing as read-only. Items, including the exe aren’t so this might not even be the reason I’m having this problem? Unless they do keep getting re-ticked and I haven’t checked yet.

folders always get the read only flag. items in the folders don’t have the read only flag re-ticked… have you checked the items in the b-net launcher folders for the read only flag?

It doesn’t seem like anything’s showing up as read-only (though it’s a pain in the butt considering some times I get the properties for the foldier instead anyways) is there a specific folder the bnet launcher should be looking at to launch because I’m starting to wonder if the issue is something like bnet isn’t looking in the right folder, I can’t tell if it is, though because afaik there’s no way for bnet to show me what specific folder it’s looking in.

Imo it seems more like bnet can’t FIND any of the WoW games I have since it seems to try to launch and fail every fifteen seconds when I try booting up retail, cata classic, and even just classic which I installed to see if the issue was the same for new installs.

I did try to just run WoW’s exe from retail’s folder and got an error saying my computer can’t run it, though I thought that might’ve just been because I’m trying to run the exe directly from the folder or something.

Update: Correction, apparently Cata classic is fine and dandy now, it’s just retail and the classic that I think has SoD that tries to launch for fifteen seconds before giving up.
