I never understood why people like mogs so much, i never cared about mogs, i have very few. I only look for mounts that i really like and i don’t care so much either. But i also don’t care about having a mount or not, i can buy a griffin from Stormwind’s npc that will also take me everywhere. I can use the simple mog that i will be able to play the same way.
Why are players more interested in looking for mogs and mounts rather than playing content created to be played?
Because that’s how they enjoy the game?

No different than real life. Just because I like to dress nicely and drive a shiny car doesn’t mean I don’t like to do other stuff too.
Mounts and mog lasts forever. Gearing gets outdated as soon as the next patch hits. 
Also good transmog improves DPS.

My guild leader wants to strangle me sometimes because I’ll choose mog from the great vault over ilevel/stats.

Everyone pays the same sub. If they want to collect things then that is their business. I don’t understand it, but I don’t need to.
a good mog is like a good suit, makes you feel taller than the world. if you like the way your character looks, you are a going to feel better playing it, a better mood leads to better play, therefore a good mog is a performance advantage.
For the casual player who isn’t interested in the rat race, collecting has become a valid alternative hobby. Blizzard realizes this and has leaned in hard as evidenced by the large amount of collectibles they’ve added over the years. It’s worked out pretty well but I don’t know how much longer it’s going to last. Are we going to reach a point where we have thousands of mounts, thousands of batle pets, thousands of toys? It doesn’t seem feasible to me.
Just FYI: There are is currently 900+ unique mounts. And there is well over 1300 unique pets.
