The stuff you get from R12-14 is way too strong to exist in BWL era, and in 2004 it didn’t. Blizzard released classic with the same PvP gear that existed at the end of Naxx. What they really need to is scale down the PvP gear to have a similar ILVL gap in phase 3 as it does in phase 6 currently, and then scale up when AQ and Naxx come out.
The new honor system is much better than before and tbh AV is the proper place for bots and honor-buds to be grinding for their PvE BIS. The people who queue WSG now are actually there to play - so the AV meta is good for competitive players.

As someone who tries to be objective and doesn’t shy away from a good debate or argument Ive found it beneficial to me to remain as consistent as possible so as to avoid any contradictions, hypocrisy or double standards.
I would have no problem with this, especially if it delays R14 acquisition in the early phases. I think it servers as a nice, long term solo-friendly catch up in the current phase but it’s quite strong for MC/BWL, and maybe even AQ40 when that’s relevant content. If we’re entertaining changes though, there are better ways to go about it than to just funnel everybody back into the old system.
It might be nice to explore the possibility adding different tiers of gear for each phase and rank caps. A quick example might be…
MC - Max rank of 5. Offers dungeon level blue gear.
BWL - Max rank of 8. Offers mid MC level blue gear.
AQ40 - Max rank of 11. Offers mid BWL level epic gear.
Naxx - Max rank of 14. Offers mid AQ40 level epic gear (ie current rewards).
I would also change the amount of honour required to hit each rank on a per-phase basis so that it takes an amount of time comparable (but not the same as) to the ~2.3m honour (optimal path, sans caps) it takes to get to R14 now. So R5 might start at 1.3m honour total and then each phase scales it back and requires another 1.3m honour to move to the next rank maximum, distributing the remaining in an exponential growth across the remaining rank breakpoints.
So in the MC phase you would need, say, 1.3m honour to get to R5. However, in the Naxx phase you would need 1.3m honour to get to R11, then another 1.3m to go from R11 to R14.
0.195m → R5
0.455m → R5 to R8
0.65m → R8 to R11
1.3m → R11 to R14
Anyway, just a random thought off the top of my head but yea, I’d rather see a fully fleshed out change here than the old honour system shoe-horned in.
(Also, fully support fresh servers for you folks wanting them!)
I comment on this in a post after yours. I agree with your statement here but this really only applies in a fresh server setting. If such a thing happens I do think those rewards are too strong to be accessible, but I also don’t think the old honour system really prohibits people form getting if they’re willing to no-life their way to them, which is all that it requires.
I’m honestly surprised Blizzard let those rewards out so early. They’re fine for the current power levels we have now but they were kinda inappropriate for phase 2.
It really does because there’s an actual cap on how many players can earn R14 each week. R14 honor grind with decay and bracket-mafias is for a pretty rare type of freak, especially rare in the context of Classic’s release in 2019 before the min-max freakshow pushed most normal players off the game.
So yeah, R14 gear is the wrong item level for that phase and basically it wasn’t an issue because most sane people never even tried to get it.
I think one of the items, maybe the shoulders, is a contender for phase 6 BiS, isn’t it? I don’t think all the items are good though. My R14 will be a Ret Pally… we take what we can get!
The gear is definitely not the best in the game in current phase though, which is why people getting it as “catch up” gear isn’t really all that troublesome. Plus it’s not like you just get it for free, as folks would have you believe. I think the actually need to look at the caps, but that’s a topic for a later date.
This is a whole other thing, but really doesn’t make for a strong argument in returning to the old honour system. It’s just a bad system, no matter which phase we’re in. I’m actually perfectly fine with the grind taking a longer amount of time (overall) but a group of players shouldn’t be able to hold their entire server hostage, with the only counter being to no-life honour grind more.
If we ever do get fresh servers though, offically supported ones, I do hope they look at the reward structure. Or just defer them until at least Phase 5.
I think they would have a higher opinion of it if there were not people that cheated their way to it. And they got punished. But they could and did cheat their way to in in the old system too.
I’m not gonna sit here and say that it’s ok that people AFK their way to R14. There’s a lot going on right now that I’m not happy about… my server is overrun with farmers exploiting free transfers to export resources to whitemane so the gold farmers can keep buying their consumables without having to farm them. So much so to the point where it’s getting legitimately hard to find pretty much anything in any of the max level zones (EPL, WS, BS, Silithus).
Just because people are doing that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t take a lot of work to get R14 if you do it legit though, just the same as farming your own consumables is a legit amount of work, even though there are people who buy it. Also, I’m preeeeeetty sure people bought R14 in the old system too.
Really what I’m saying here is, it’s kind of a bummer that people don’t wanna just play the game
I meaaaan I feel like most aren’t stressing over ranking decays not being in anyways. Nowadays the only ones that can take advantage of that are the unemployed and/or those living off the government. The system has never shown skill, only that someone else is supporting them to play the game 12+ hours a day lmfao.
