All sounds from my computer are being blocked by WoW classic era when its open, when i close the game everything works fine again. I cannot even use the windows system sound test while wow is open. This began a few hours ago for me.
Im having this problem on retail too. Nothing works when wow is running. Cant hear discord, spotify, youtube, nothing
Me and several guildies have spent hours trying to figure out wtf is causing this and weve got nothing

Did you ever find a fix for this? Started happening to me a few hours ago.
I have this problem in retail and have tried everything:
- reinstalling sound drivers
- scan and repair game
- delete and reinstall game
- modify in game sound settings
It doesnt seem to be an issue with the 10.1.5 PTR… can we get Blizzard to chime in please…whats the point of having a technical issues channel if noone from Blizzard chimes in
Same, I’ve been directed to uninstall and reinstall drivers, scan and repair the game, etc. Basically all the options you have listed above. And then some. I’ve disabled all of my addons thinking maybe one of those was causing wow sounds to have supremacy over everything else on my computer. Got nothing for that. Sigh…
I’m at my wits end here lol. I’m tempted to just buy a new computer. I spent thousands on this one though, for the sole purpose of playing WoW- my old computer was perfectly adequate. Obviously something I’ve done or updated is causing this. I just have no idea what. And the people who have helped me to try and address this issue are completely at a loss. This all started with the new patch, last Wednesday shortly after season 2 came out. I dunno what happened. But something changed and my **** has been ****** since.
Also running into this only since last Tuesday (May 16th) reset. Tried driver updates / install and even repatching/installing the WoW client and disabling/removing Addons as well.
Tried changing Settings for audio output to disable exclusivity and tried running WoW as non-Admin and nothing has worked.
Seems like WoW itself is running something in the background that is overriding the Audio output permissions…
i think going from fullscreen to fullscreen-windowed might fix it.
Is the sound settings set to allow programs to take exclusive control of the sound?
Have tried both enabling and disabling this. One of the first things i was directed to try in a very VERY long extensive list of possible fixes lol

I did solve this after a lot of trying the same suggestions everyone is posting. I believe this has something to do with a windows update that went out around the time of my post. My computer auto updated, and when I restored my PC to a save from the previous week everything worked fine. I have since turned off auto updates, and everything has been working fine.
Oh nice. Ill try this when i get home. Hope it works lol
