It just screams greed when China money was the only thing holding Blizzard up. I don’t want to say it is true or not, but if Wow gets even worse because of this. I think the culture shock of “you don’t matter as much as china.” to the players would be huge.
You act as if starlink isn’t a thing. Even before starlink there’s been satellite internet… The Chinese won’t be able to do crap about that.
Does this mean I will be able to find people to play with that do not want you to pay them or sell you gold?
The way u just said “ Tibet”. Tells all of us everything we need to know about you. End of.
There’s a law in China that prevents kids from playing more than an hour. Lovely place.
There is a likely chance this is a negotiation tactic and they’ll find a different publisher. Having folks in China experience denial of service for any length of time is bad for business and your reputation for future customers.
Silly post imho.
Last shareholder meeting ATVI stated that China represents 3% of their revenue stream. I would not call 3% “holding a company up”.
No. This only impacts the servers in China run by NetEase. Players using VPNs to play on Americas or EU servers are not impacted.
Anyone trying to sell gold for real money should be reported, just like we always have.
Possible. Also possible that the costs of having to create a modified game, separate teams for localization, legal, marketing, etc. is just not worth it for 3% of the revenue they were getting.
It does not stop players with VPNs from still playing on Americas or EU servers so Blizz can still get plenty of money, just not “officially” on the separate Chinese realms.
Thank you, that is the info I needed. So this is a non issue. That is why I said I did not know it was true or not.
So losing china is not that huge of a blow for the company. People making it out like this is breaking Blizzard bank.
I mean, it is the internet, and in particular the WoW forums. Exaggerating, or misrepresenting, is kind of expected?
I am very sure the reason they talked about the share of revenue China represents last shareholder meeting was because they knew they were not going to renew and did not want to spook investors.
I am not even remotely stressed about it. I kind of view it as a good thing, unless they end up going with Tencent as a distributor. That, I would not be so happy with. Too much power over gaming already. I would be cool with it is they dropped China as an official market entirely. I feel bad for the OW teams and stuff though. Fans there who don’t want to use a VPN would be out of luck.
Anyway, happy Sunday!
Thank you for the update, and same to you! I feel the same way btw.
I get so many mails on Wotlk classic. Its astounding
If you think whaling targets mostly western players, you don’t understand Chinese gamers.
Earnings report says they arent making THAT much money from china and more then likely had a bad deal with netease in the first place.
Blizzard is more then likely just gonna do a similar deal else where more in their favor
Tbh any chinese distributor is not gonna be the best considering all are tied to the government but atlest for blizzard it would probably be just a better deal money wise for them so we will see
Exactly, just take a look on illidan, at least 5 or 6 big guilds there and very active
that would be extremely difficult and resource expensive. starlink uses a phased array antenna to connect to the satellite, this is like a laser beam that bends to chase the target. jamming signals isn’t as easy as just pressing a button that transmits white noise on a given frequency. about all the chinese government could do would be to ban sales of dishes in china, but that wouldn’t stop them from being smuggled. given that many world governments have a vested interest in seeing the chinese government overthrown, you can guarantee dishes will be smuggled in.
Um, it only counts as World War 3 if Russia and China are involved,
The Ukraine War I admit is starting to go out of sight out of mind for me, that was looking scary and tense for a bit there, but Ukraine joins Nato then the European Union and all the rest of it…
But when China makes a move on Tawaiin, that’s when we will be in serious trouble I think.
As someone that’s paid nicely and no longer has enough time to play 18hrs a day like I once did, I’d welcome loot boxes and raid tier in the store with arms wide open. I can get a million gold with under 2hrs worth of irl work, I would have to spend much longer than 2hrs to get that gear/gold/etc equivalent in game.
I think you’re greatly missing my point lol. My comment on the 1% of China was a direct response to the argument that “there are a lot of Chinese tourists so Chinese people can’t possibly be xenophobic.” The quality of life for the average person in China is an entirely different subject that I never even tried to go into, as I know think you wouldn’t understand or believe.
