Just wondering something, why are the nights in wow never fully dark? Is it because azeroth has two moons you think? How interesting would it be if blizzard made wow get as dark as it does in real life.
Some zones it is and Orgrimmar used to be WAY darker at night time. You can still see that in the classic version of WoW.
I’ve played games where there was a dark night sky. I did not like them.
darkmoon isnt up right now but there will be some on the auction house.
makes some battlegrounds look really nice. AB in particular.
I only recently found out about the inky black potion and it’s so cool. Some zones just look absolutely amazing with it.
I’ll have to look into it.
Couple of reasons, but the main one was people complained about nights being too dark - and it always being night when they played.
For darker, blue-er, glow-ier nights, in tandem with Inky Black Potion, go to your in-game settings and adjust the contrast to how bright or dark you like it. Not the Brightness, but the Contrast.
On top of that, I swear to you this makes all the difference, go to your computer settings > Accessibility > Display > Color Filters > Enable Color filter > Choose a dark cobalt blue color from the color wheel and turn the intensity of the filter almost to the last or second last dash marker.
I promise you, you won’t regret it. Your game will look SO different and dark and calm and glowy. Even the forums and your entire browsing experience will be so different. Much calmer, darker and glow-ier. Just try it. You can always turn it back to however you want it. But just… try eeet! : D
To recap the instructions:
-
System Preferences
-
Accessibility
-
Display
-
Color Filters
-
Enable Color Filters
-
Color Filters (the option down the very bottom I think, not the standard filters)
-
Intensity all the way up
-
Pick a color from the color wheel (any color you want but I prefer the the richest cobalt blue)
-
Enjoy!

I also use a Bass-booster extension on Chrome as well as a Dark Mode / Night Reader extension so everything is a lot easier on my eyes and ears.
(For the Bass-boosting extensions, turn your player’s volume down and your computer volume up, not the other way around. That way you avoid your sound being static-y).

I wonder why they don’t just use darker lighting, then add an option slider for exposure via post-processing?
Probably made sense to just bump up the lights the first time they brightened everything, but even a toaster these days probably has gpu to spare for post effects.
OP, it used to get darker but people complained so they lightened things up and created the inky black potion.
I’d have to quit playing if it wasn’t an option. I’m too old for that with my vision and I play mostly at night. No, brightness settings aren’t an option, I don’t know why people think it is.
And as it stands, the Sunwarmed Sand is a bs move to give us daylight, because it drops when you die, the toy has a 24 hour cooldown and only lasts an hour, so the individual items have to be bought with Timewalking badges and also don’t keep their buff for more than an hour— if it isn’t randomly removed from dying or going to a dungeon.
I think they need to add accessibility options. One for normal nights as they are now, one for daylight and one for darker nights. Let people decide what they want to see.
I do think those potions are cool, but I lament whenever Blizz takes something that could just be an option in the game’s settings and makes it a consumable item instead. Or even worse, a toy with a cooldown that’s longer than the duration…
Nothing is better than using Inky Black Potion in dungeons on a late night grind.
Shadowlands dungeons such as Necrotic Wake and Plaguefall are just incredible with inky black potion on. Throw that on and some peaceful music… perfect night.
My suggestions in my previous post is what has helped me, personally, in the interim, in terms of accessibility. Maybe it can help others too. Everyone’s different.
for dark and “spooky” if not up now, blizzard arathi comes up soon. think its this week or next? check when home.
I love this brawl. Dark, Snowy. can’t see 4 feet past your nose. Awesome.
While its great to make arathi easier…I actually like not being able to call out incomings to mines or LM. as alliance leaves stable. and you are at BS. since normal arathi…you see it all really.
Blizzard arathi? nope. you can’t see much of anything. I love that.
Ever tried the true night of Skyrim? Constantly casting glow balls. But if you’re a cat, it’s nice.
It can be frustrating
Wasn’t there like an actual mechanic in Darkshire where you had to use torches to be able to see at night? It was either in Classic or planned for Classic and scrapped. I can’t remember.
For those that have played for a long time there use to be darkness in game and in the settings they had options that you COULD change but some people did not understand this and said the darkness was hurting them added with the effects of spells it cause some people to get sick or triggered eye problems. I think this is the right time to return the original Dark feature to the game and add back the options they had in the settings. Go look at FF14 and the massive spells effects they have. Wow looks tame compared to those.
In contrast to my previous post, I tried this out and it really does go a long way towards making it feel more like WoW actually has a nighttime again. Then I added the potion on top of it and…lol, when I was in Boralus I could literally only see what was illuminated by the lamps and torches. It’s great!
Visibility/accessibility issue. There’s a potion from the DMF that makes the game super dark if you want that.
