The top 10 MMOs on steam are all F2P and are thriving off this model. WoW on the other hand has been declining over the years and isn’t even on that chart. In the past i think a subscription model worked to fund the game but now people don’t want to subscribe. They want micro transactions and statistics show they pay MORE than the cost of a sub if the game is free. I’ll still play regardless because I love the game but the proof is in the puddle as they say. Just look at the charts.

Destiny 2. Eh. It’s decent but it isn’t thriving.
MIR4. 63% user rating. One of those AFK auto-play mobile games ported to PC. No thank you.
Monster Hunter: World. Not free to play.
Lost Ark. Really? 80% Bots dropped off hard. Peaked at 1.3 million, currently has 30k.
Black Desert. Uhm. An iconic Asian time-sink MMO known for store purchases?
The list goes on. A mix of free-to-play games with >15k 24h peak players or non-F2P games.

No to free to play. It will destroy what good there is left in this game. A massive cash shop and gambling boxes would be the future. Most of the development time would go into maintaining the cash shop.

I mean I guess technically it is, but then any online game with online features is suddenly an MMO.
On topic; Free to Play means a transition to micro transaction hell. Like seriously, y’all think a 200 tendy bundle is worthy of a meltdown? Just look at FTP game shops. Not even saying the companies of those games are in the wrong, they need to make money somehow since there is no sub.
Overall I’m fine with wow having a sub. Better than what could be.

People call Diablo 4 an MMO and you can only see like 14 people at a time so not surprised they’d call Monster Hunter World one.

Yeah I wouldn’t consider half of the games on that list MMO’s personally, but according to steam those are the biggest ones.

No. It’s still only $15 a month, I can accidentally spend more than that at a Wawa/sheetz. The cost to content ratio is through the roof for such a pittance.

I am quite aware of what F2P trash is, because I am a veteran OW player. I just think it’s cute that people think there’s any way that WoW doesn’t eventually end up like that as well, lol.

Agreed. At best it’d end up something like SWTOR where you have a sub option that lets you ignore the restrictions/limitations on, well, everything (but then we’re basically back where we started).

Legit question, have you ever played a Free to play MMO?
We are nowhere near FTP, heck our cash shop doesn’t even compare to other sub based mmos like FFXIV.
Our cash shop and content pacing/quality are far from FTP levels.

Nope, because they’d be pushing the Cash Shop even harder, finding ways to lock access to basic things, like character slots,bank slots, to make you pony up the cash, and still charge you to pay for the next expansion.

I don’t think I’d like to see it go completely f2p. Maybe ESO’s model of still buying expacs, and most of the game is free, but there is a premium offer.
